PA-Sen: Toomey Adds Darrell Owens to Staff

Darrell-OwensU.S. Senator Pat Toomey has announced that Darrell Owens will serve as National Security Advisor and Military Legislative Assistant in his Washington, D.C. office.

A native of Waterford in Erie County, Owens spent the past six years focusing on military and veteran issues for Congressman Glenn Thompson, the Republican incumbent of Pennsylvania’s Fifth District.

“I am pleased that Darrell is joining my team in Washington,” Sen. Toomey said.

Owens holds the rank of First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Reserve where he currently serves as an Intelligence Officer. A graduate of the Air Force Air Command & Staff College, he is working towards a Master’s degree from the U.S. Army War College, in Carlisle.

“In addition to serving our country in uniform, Darrell has worked effectively with Rep. Thompson to help Pennsylvania’s veterans,” Sen. Toomey said.

“He will help me craft legislation to ensure that veterans are the first in line for the best care we can deliver and he will help cut through red tape that delays those benefits.”

The new advisor will join Toomey’s State Director, Bob DeSousa, a Colonel in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard, in serving over one million veterans who live in the state. Owens will also assist the various military posts across the Commonwealth.

  1. Veterans issues? You have done nothing except stall the Veterans of this country. Shame on all of you money grubbing phoneys.

  2. Hey Toomey how about getting this slum of a State cleaned up or is that not your concern as Senator?

  3. Wow, all of you people making negative comments about Darrell are completely ignorant to the point infinity. I have known Darrell since he was a skinny highschool Freshman working at his uncles Gas station pumping gas all while maintaining a 4.0 GPA and involved in student government/council, debate etc . He always had a smile was polite Honest hard working ! He has always had drive to be in politics and to make a positive difference he has a heart of gold and anyone that’s his friend could easily testify to the same, one day you will see the light hopefully.

  4. I have no objection to Toomey hiring whoever he wants. I find it absurd whenever these meaningless press releases get published as news in general. I had no idea who Darrell Owens was before this press release, and I don’t really care who he is afterwards.

Is this in any way important to Toomey’s functioning as a Senator vis-a-vis actual people in Pennsylvania? Are PA residents going to care who Toomey’s L.A.s are? I suspect not, unless they are doing an exceptionally great or terrible job. Darrell Owens hasn’t done *anything* yet. Are voters in the 2016 election going to care about Toomey’s official side staff? Again, I doubt it unless it’s exceptionally bad or good.

Just because a press release was written doesn’t mean it is newsworthy.

  5. ummmmm… There’s something wrong here? A LT in the army reserves ? ACSC only takes field grade officers, Majors…. And The war college is only for future colonels….so something’s wrong here

  6. @observer: If Darrell Owens has already been to AF Command and Staff and is doing the correspondence program at the Army War College, there’s clearly something in his background that’s perhaps not spelled out here. Do you realize the man Darrell Owens is replaced was a retired LTC? He moved to a job in another Senate office. Get a grip. I’ll take Toomey any day over an admiral demoted for command climate. Absolutely no reason to put someone clearly abusive of his staff in a position of greater authority.

Way to be a partisan hack on this one. Congratulations, you are what is wrong with this country. Try not to make everyone else’s life you interact with as miserable as your own.

  8. So Toomey found a wet-behind-the-ears First Looey who has never seen combat or set foot overseas? You would think that with all the REAL war veterans out there, Tommey could give this job to someone deserving of the title. But then, Republicans don’t want ANYTHING to do with real men who have seen war up close – would upset their Chickenhawk theories. And Toomey is as chickenhawk as they come. This move does less than zero to counter the Admiral’s advantage in policy.
