PA-Sen: Toomey to Introduce Own Gun Bill

Pat-ToomeySenator Pat Toomey is going his own way.

Earlier in the day, Jonathan Tamari of the Inquirer reported that Sen. Toomey was hoping to coordinate with Michael Bloomberg’s group on legislation to prevent those on the terrorist watch list from purchasing a firearm. Those talks fell through, however, and now the Senator will be introducing his own bill.

Apparently, Toomey was concerned that people who may be accidentally included on the list would have a difficult time getting off of it.

In order to prevent such a circumstance, Sen. Toomey proposes having the list of suspected terrorists who are banned from buying firearms approved and annually reviewed by the FISA court. Additionally, if someone were to challenge their claim, the Attorney General would have to turn over all the evidence.

Democrats found Toomey’s demands too cumbersome, so now the Senator is set to introduce his own piece of legislation tomorrow.

All the while, the McGinty campaign remains unimpressed.

“Senator Toomey had the opportunity to prevent suspected terrorists from being able to buy guns last December, and instead he opposed it,” McGinty Communications Director Sean Coit stated. “It should not have taken the worst mass shooting in U.S. history or an election year for Senator Toomey to return to this issue.”

“Now, he’s simply giving himself some political cover by introducing an unworkable bill that is very unlikely to receive bipartisan support and would do little to actually prevent shootings,” Coit concluded. “He’s trying to sell it as an honest effort to make our communities safer, but we should recognize this for what it is: a political calculation and little else.”

  1. Toomey is literally running rings around McGinty as he runs a highly organized and effective campaign while Katie McGinty stumbles through mistake after mistake with the silly claim to be the first one in her family to go to college only to find her brother had been, then there was the issue of her ties to the energy industry and then being labeled a “weak candidate” by an esteemed member of the national media. And now McGinty is down in the polls to a surging Toomey campaign. What a surprising US Senate race.

  2. Doesn’t look like Democrats want to keep guns out of the hands of individuals on the terror watch list unless you or I are on the list incorrectly and we have no due process rights to fix it. Makes me wonder if they really want action or an axe to grind in an election year.

  3. Toomey’s gun bill will issue an assault rifle and 10,000 rounds of ammo to every newborn starting January 1 2017. Stands no chance of passing. They would have to institute a .05cent an ounce tax on soda to pay for all of the rifles. His largest contributors are the NRA and gun makers. Too Toomey, you lose again.

  4. What negatives? The only real negative Katie McGinty carries into November is that the vast majority of voters don’t know her (yet).

Once it comes time to vote, PA voters will have to decide between voting for:

-the happy woman who worked her way up from blue-collar origins to positions in the Clinton White House, and the Rendell and Wolf administrations, and and is running with Hillary; or

    – the incumbent Senator who hasn’t really done anything and is running with Donald Trump.

You tell me who has the negatives in that deal.

  5. Toomey is winning himself re-election by what he is doing this week. All he has to do, after all, is look like a reasonable incumbent. Katie’s negatives will drag her down.

  6. Toomey ONLY plays the moderate when he knows he will fail and can blame Democrats for his failure.
