On Monday, Toomey voted against a bill that would stop the federal government from shutting down due to Planned Parenthood funding, according to a report by Jonathan Tamari of CapitolInq.
The junior Senator from PA voted in favor of a procedural measure to move the bill along earlier in the day, before being one of 19 senators – all Republicans – to vote against the bill. Last week, Toomey told New York Magazine: “I don’t think it’s a good idea to shut down the government” over Planned Parenthood.
GOP presidential candidate and Sen. Ted Cruz is leading the charge for a federal government shutdown to ensure no taxpayer dollars are sent to Planned Parenthood, a women’s health care provider.
A final Senate vote on the bill is expected by the end of the week.
31 GOP Senators voted to keep the government open, including many who face reelection next year like Toomey.
Former Congressman and Democratic Senate candidate Joe Sestak – who lost to Toomey in 2010 – spoke out after Toomey’s vote.
“Time and again, Toomey has shown that he is willing to put his hyperpartisan ideology over the basic responsibility funding the government – even as the majority of his Republican colleagues join with Democrats in keeping the government open,” Sestak said.
UPDATE: Sen. Toomey sent the following response to PoliticsPA:
“Yesterday we witnessed yet another example of the dysfunction of the U.S. Senate. I have strongly supported efforts to permanently stop government shutdowns. Shutdowns are no way to conduct the nation’s business. Efforts this year to fund the government have been routinely filibustered by Harry Reid and Senate Democrats, because they want to use the prospect of a shutdown for political leverage. It is now apparent that the government will not shut down, so the question before the Senate is whether taxpayers should be forced to fund Planned Parenthood’s outrageous extremist practices. I voted against that, and I am instead in favor of shifting Planned Parenthood’s funding over to health centers that provide essential services to women in need.”

aaron – grow up. The highly edited videos have been debunked and Planned Parenthood has been vindicated in every state that reviewed the videos. Crawl back under your rock and keep your slimy right-wing nose out of my – or any other woman’s – uterus.
I cannot believe you liberal democrats. You people will raise holy hell over the death of a stinking lion but say nothing about the murder of human children in a procedure called abortion. If a fetus is not a human being what does it become upon birth, a frog? No, it is a human being from conception. The fetus doesn’t develop into anything else!
Toomey is a TeaBagger. Toomey is a “Tool.” Plus, and even more importantly, Toomey borders on being delusional. The once proud Republican Party is really killing itself with these middle-aged, white, neo-cons. A real shame. And a black guy—also nuts—Carson. Wow!
Why force women to give birth to children they don’t want. Unwanted children are vulnerable to exploitation and sex trafficking. Seems evil to me.
Tea-bag Toomey
aaron-
1) An embryo is not a child
2) A fetus is not a child
3) A pregnant teen is a child and shouldn’t be forced to have a child
4) The same people who want to stop abortions also want to defund contraception
Diano – that is a sick comment. What do you have against unborn children. It’s funny how u will defend plants and trees before u will defend innocent children. Absolutely repulsive.
aaron-
I wish the Federal government would fund abortions, but they won’t. The govt. money for Planned Parenthood all goes into contraception, screening diseases, exams, etc. So, cutting Planned Parenthood (or threatening to shutdown the whole govt just to cut Planned Parenthood is irresponsible).
Sestak is for killing unborn babies..mcginty is for killing unborn babies. Toomey is against killing unborn babies. I’m am outraged by Toomeys defense of human life!
This guy acing more and more like a TEA-drinking loon. Can’t wait to vote for someone else.
The writing in this story is so convoluted that one cannot understand what Toomey voted for or against. But it seems he wants it both ways, both from his votes and his convoluted statement.
Jason Addy, you’re such a hack. Funny it comes on the same day that you publish this garbage:
“PA-BGT: Wolf Rejects Stopgap Measure With Veto”
Wolf vetoes a budget that would fund the government and yet there is not even a vague illusion to a shutdown. His action alone is sufficient to cause a shutdown.
By your logic, only a Republican can shutdown the government because of a vote against a proposed budget.
Thank you Senator Toomey. God Bless You!
Only faux news indoctrinites are unaware of the resounding empirical evidence which debunked the PLanned Parenthood fabrication videos.
Once again, Pat serves his Owners at Club for Growth rather than his constituents. And to Moron Aaron, no one “sells” baby parts – stop getting your news from Faux News.
Toomey is lying about Planned Parenthood.
By federal law, expenses related to the provision of fetal tissues are reimbursed.
dAleidon and co. Are fraudsters currently awaiting trial for their illegal activities.
By federal law, no taxpayer dollars go for abortion services.
Lol. Sestak thinks that haulting funding to an organization that sells aborted baby parts is hyper partisan.
