On Monday, Rep. Lloyd Smucker (R-Lancaster) and Democratic challenger Jess King participated in their first debate at Millersville University.
The candidates for the newly drawn 11th Congressional district shared a different vision of the United States and the direction in which the country and economy is heading.
The Republican incumbent lauded the GOP tax reform bill for the current state of the economy.
“I believe in more dollars in people’s pockets to spend in the way they want,” Smucker said according to WITF. “It’s the private sector that creates jobs, not the government.”
Smucker attempted to paint King as an advocate for the far left, “socialist agenda.”
King fired back by stating that the not everyone is benefiting from the low unemployment rate and thinks investing in a number of initiatives would better suit the nation.
“Economic mobility is at an all time low in this country,” said King according to WITF. “I think good, smart government is about investing in that and making sure this country works for all of us.”
