PA8: Self-Funding Puts Chrin Close to Cartwright’s 3Q Fundraising Total

Another quarter, another $200,000 invested from the GOP challenger.

According to the FEC, Republican candidate for Pennsylvania’s 8th district, John Chrin loaned his campaign $200,000 from July to the end of the September. In the previous filing period, Chrin donated $205,000 to his campaign. In the election cycle-to-date, the Republican has loaned his campaign $1.1M.

According to the FEC, incumbent Democratic Rep. Matt Cartwright (D-Lackawanna) raised $500,000 from July to the end of September. The Democrat nearly doubled his fundraising from the previous filing period, when he brought in $280,000 to his campaign. Cartwright has raised $2.26M in the election cycle-to-date.

The Cartwright campaign boasted about the previous quarters numbers and believes it indicates that momentum is on their side.

“This fundraising record is a strong reflection of the enthusiasm we have seen for Matt’s campaign, and it’s a credit to the hard work the Congressman and his staff are willing to do to help our campaign succeed,” said Cartwright Campaign Manager Colleen Eagen Gerrity. “With only three weeks to go until the election, our campaign is poised and ready to finish strong and deliver a decisive victory. We won’t stop until 8 PM on November 6th.”

Chrin’s campaign raised $270,000 from July to the end of September, but that coupled with his loan, the candidate filed $470,000 for the 3rd quarter. Chrin raised two and a half times more than he did in the previous filing period, $110,000, but still trails the incumbent in funds raised in the whole campaign.

The candidates have almost brought in the same amount of total funds in the cycle-to-date to their campaign, with Cartwright bringing in $2.26M to Chrin’s $2.12M.

The candidates have almost spent nearly the same amount of money in the election cycle-to-date as well. Cartwright has spent $1.58M in the election cycle-to-date, while Chrin has spent nearly $1.5M. Cartwright significantly outspent Chrin from July to the end of September, with the incumbent spending close to $1.1M, while the GOP challenger spent slightly under $700,000 during the same time period.

Entering the beginning of this month, Cartwright held nearly $1.3M cash on hand, while Chrin brought in $620,000 cash on hand to the month of October.

The New York Times/Siena College Live poll is currently underway for this district that went for President Trump by 10 points in 2016. New York Times correspondent, Nate Cohn has the race as “Leans Democratic.”

FiveThirtyEight currently has the race listed as “Likely Democratic.”

This story was updated to correct the total amount spent by the Cartwright campaign during the 2018 election cycle-to-date and a comment from the Cartwright campaign.

  1. Inside Elections has this race in Pa 8th “likely democratic” and this has been such for a month or so. “Inside Elections” does not toss around designations easily, in fact, Az 2nd had the Dem candidate see their R opponent have tv pulled out of a main market and the designation still remained. Anyway, Self funding is a mixed bag. If we look at Scott Wagner who has done as such with many many millions spent, we can see being behind by nearly 25 points has caused some to think that any Republican candidate running for Governor could have achieved this self funded or not.
