Patrick Murphy Nominated for Under Secretary of the Army

Patrick-MurphyPatrick Murphy could soon be heading back to Washington, D.C.

According to Jonathan Tamari of the Inquirer, President Obama intends to nominate Murphy to be the next Under Secretary of the Army.

Murphy was the first Iraq War veteran elected to Congress when he defeated Mike Fitzpatrick in 2006. Fitzpatrick won the rematch in 2010.

During his tenure, Congressman Murphy was a leader in the effort to repeal the armed forces’ “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy. President Obama signed the legislation in December 2010.

In 2012, he ran for the Democratic nomination for Attorney General but lost to Kathleen Kane.

Kane’s victory was largely attributed to the support of former President Bill Clinton.

Murphy was among President Obama’s earliest endorsers. Now that decision, which may have cost him one office, may have also aided his track to another.

  3. It was a privilege to support such a fine Officer and Gentleman as Patrick Murphy. You’ve given us a lot to be thankful for, and in your new position we all know you will shine, and continue to make us Bucks Countyites proud. All the best. Bill and Roy

  4. I had the honor of meeting Patrick under very sorrowful circumstances — at a funeral this past weekend. Another former congressman and current nominee to the Pentagon could have pulled “rank” and jumped to the head of the line. But Patrick waited in the receiving like everyone else, and paid his respects to a man he considered a mentor and a role model. For me, it was a tremendous demonstration of character — he demonstrated his respect for a man he admired with dignity, humility and honor.

  5. As 8th District Congressman, Patrick Murphy was a dependable friend of working people and their Unions. I wish him every success in his new position.

  6. Fortunately for me I’ve had the pleasure of meeting Patrick Murphy on a person level. I’m not just saying this but he is one of the most genuine people I’ve ever known. He’s not a politician he’s your neighbor, your friend, the person you wish you were. Honestly just a genuine good person! I’m on his side no matter what.

  9. Real happy to learn of this. Very proud that Pat was my own Congressman when he spearhead repeal of “don’t ask don’t tell” and I shouted it far and wide. Also Pat took courageous political risk when he supported Obama over Hillary early in campaign for 2008 election for POTUS. GO PAT!

  12. A very deserved nomination for a guy who walks the walk. He has been dealing with these issues since he served and there is no veterans advocate that has done more to deal with the issues that our modern Army has to face.

  13. Did not vote for you but wish you the best. I diagreed with you politically, but support all your success. If this doesn’t work, maybe you should consider AG to replace Kane?
