History books will bear out that Tom Corbett as Pennsylvania attorney general brought down some of the most powerful lawmakers in the state.

Beginning 2007, the career prosecutor harnessed what friends and colleagues call a formidable passion for the law to investigate a Patriot-News report that elected state officials had used millions of taxpayer dollars to illegally fund campaign costs.

Corbett orchestrated the audacious “Bonusgate” campaign that led to convictions with his signature style of a methodical, tough-nose lawman, relying unfailingly on his deputies and agents.

But friends and colleagues say that underneath the veneer of the ruthless prosecutor lies a warm, straightforward man, one not quick to anger, and who despite achieving successes against great odds remains humble.
