Peduto Cleans Up His Message in New Ad (With Video)

Pittsburgh mayoral candidate Bill Peduto released a new campaign ad Monday. It shows the City Councilman riding a street sweeper in order to illustrate how he intends “to clean things up” in the city.

It’s also a change in the tone of his ads from the past few weeks.

The thirty-second spot features Peduto riding down the streets of Pittsburgh while he delivers a voice-over touting his record of strengthening ethics in the City Council and pledging to bring that same attitude to the job of mayor.

Peduto street sweeperAs Peduto glides down the streets sweeping curbs, the ad heralds his role in “the toughest ethics laws in city history,” including how he “put limits on downtown lobbyists” and mentioning that he “cut my own pay to help save police jobs.”

Peduto also pledged that he would make sure Highmark and UPMC (which makes a cameo in the ad) will have to “pay their fair share in taxes, so we can help neighborhood businesses create jobs.”

Peduto’s latest commercial is a marked departure from his ad last week which attacked former Auditor General Jack Wagner as a flip flopper, referring to him as “both ways Wagner”. The tenor of the campaign has been muddy in general. After Peduto’s opening salvo, Wagner and a PAC chaired by Mayor Luke Ravenstahl attacked Peduto.

According to the latest Keystone Analytics poll, the two candidates are running neck and neck in the Democratic primary scheduled for May 21st, with Peduto edging out Wagner 38%-36%.

  1. Peduto looks like Michael Dukakis driving that tank…bad optics for a dumb ad.

  2. Just like his governors race was ran you are only as good as the people you are surrounded by just as luke ravenstahl a new broom sweeps clean just like peduto wil do

  3. Peduto switches to positive. Wagner goes negative. Guess who is now the leader in the race? When we look back on this race it’s going to be another example of an old-style politician running a campaign from twenty years ago in today’s world. Whoever is on his political team will sure be embarrassed. It will be tough for them to work with other people because who would want them? Wagner and his team were clearly not of the caliber of the team that Peduto put together. It seems pretty obvious.
