Last August, Pennsylvania became the 23rd state to offer online voter registration.
Today, Secretary of State Pedro A. Cortés reported that Pennsylvania online voter registration will soon cross the 100K mark.
“Since August, nearly 100,000 voters have discovered for themselves the ease and accessibility of online voter registration,” Cortés said during a press conference. “At the same time, Pennsylvania’s counties have gained more accurate voter rolls and realized savings in processing applications.”
According to a statement from the Governor’s office, the online system (which is available in English and Spanish) is more secure for applicants because the form is transmitted directly to the appropriate county voter registration office for processing.
The online voter registration site is also directly linked to PennDOT’s Motor Voter system, so if an applicant has a driver’s license or PennDOT ID card, the signature that is already on file with PennDOT will be transferred to the voter’s record.

There have been about 155,000 registrations since August 1st (as of the Feb 15th statewide snapshot).
For the people still on the books, 122,000 of them were registered during the same period in 2007-2008. (37,000 are now in the “InActive” pile)
For the same period in 2011-2012, there were only 100,000 registrations (and about 6,000 of them currently in the InActive pile).
But, clearly, the shift of nearly 2/3 of the recent registrations being electronic is significant.
I have heard of errors/problems with duplicate records (from double entry), but it sounds like those kinks have been worked out.
BTW, of the 155,000 new registrations:
66,500 Democrat
53,000 Republican
35,500 Other

How many of them were registering to vote in the presidential election for the first time? The implication is that the 100,000 voters using the website wouldn’t have registered but for the website.
