Philly GOP Chair Mike Meehan Resigns

On Saturday, Philadelphia Republican Party Chairman Mike Meehan announced that he is resigning from his post.

“Please be advised that I have resigned today as chairman, effective Nov. 12,” Meehan wrote in an email to ward leaders. “Good luck going forward.”

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that Meehan said in a statement after the announcement that “it is time for a fresh start for the Philly GOP.”

Meehan was first elected as chair of the Philadelphia Republican Party in April 2017. Other roles Meehan served in the party include General Counsel of the Republican City Committee from September 1994 until his election as chairman, as an Alternate Delegate to the 1980 Republican National Convention, and is a previous elected member of the Republican State Committee and served as part of its Leadership Committee since 2010.

Meehan’s resignation comes after the Republicans in Philadelphia lost one of the two minority at-large seats on City Council for the first time in decades. In January, there will be just two Republicans, Councilman David Oh and Brian O’Neill, serving on Philadelphia’s City Council.

The local party is set to meet on Tuesday to discuss their future, while various names have surfaced as possible successors. Billy Penn reports that rumored candidates include state Rep. Martina White and Jim Pio, secretary of the Philly GOP. The Inquirer reports that Joe McColgan, who briefly made a bid for the position in 2017, but ultimately backed out and supported Meehan, said he’s been approached by some ward leaders about running again.

  1. Or the entire GOP could simply disband. Then they would no longer need to kiss the NRA ass and lick Trump’s boots (?). NRA and Trump could try to set up their own party. Or simply join the American Nazi Party.

    1. The Nazis confiscated guns from private citizens, worshipped the environment for reasons having little to do with science, promoted censorship, accorded privileged status based on race and ethnicity, and centralized the economy to the point of eliminating the private sector and free markets.

I see your point about Trump and the NRA resembling them. Thank heavens we have AOC, Bernie, and Liz Warren speaking out against such evils.

  2. If only Poprik and the other county chairs would resign. They need new people who arent looking to use the position just to make money.

Good luck fundraising as the minority!

    1. The Chesco, Delco, Montco, and Bucks County chairs should also do the only right and honorable thing, and resign, since they have all been following and signing on to the same failed leadership policies since at least 2010 which has led to this debacle. Thanks for nothing!
