In a large show of support, 50 labor leaders from across the Commonwealth have affixed their signatures to a letter in support of Gov. Josh Shapiro to be selected as Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate.

“Pennsylvania is home to over a half million union workers who play a critical role not just in our workplaces, but in our neighborhoods and our communities,” the opening paragraph reads. “Organized labor built the Pennsylvania and United States that we know and love today. At this moment in history, the role of unions is more critical than ever, and we take seriously the commitment of our elected officials to support and promote the union way of life. No one has been more steadfast in their commitment to working people than Josh Shapiro.”

The letter also praised the state’s chief executive for his leadership and for fostering a climate of economic security and opportunity.

“As we continue to navigate unprecedented and challenging times, it is reassuring to have leaders like Governor Shapiro who are unwavering in their commitment to the needs and concerns of working families – his dedication to upholding the principles of fairness, equality, and justice in the workplace has set a commendable example for leaders across the nation.”

For her part, Harris also thanked unions for the role they play in America during a speech to a teachers union in Houston on Thursday.

“You may not be a union member, but thank unions for the 5-day workweek,” she said. “For the 8-hour workday. Thank unions for sick leave and paid family leave and vacation time. Because the fact is unions help build the American middle class.”

The letter concluded by stating that the country deserves leaders who have the backs of working people.

“Make no mistake – Governor Shapiro has always had our backs, and the men and women of organized labor will continue to have his.”
