PHL-15: SEIU Endorses Kenney

SEIU_32BJ_logoIt’s fair to say Jim Kenney is now the labor candidate in the Philly Mayoral Democratic Primary.

Just this month he has won the backing of the AFL-CIO, the PFT, the FOP and the PWF.

Now, you can add the SEIU.

The Services Employee International Union (SEIU) is the fastest growing labor group in the country and according to their local Mid-Atlantic affiliate, the 32BJ, they represent around 10,000 workers in Philadelphia and it’s surrounding areas.

The union is the beneficiary of recent changes in the nation’s economic structures as manufacturing has given way to service jobs in the last few decades. Put simply, at a time when labor’s strength as a whole is ebbing, the SEIU continues to grow.

“Cities are electing strong progressive leaders like Jim Kenney, who put an end stop frisk, support airport workers, public schools and a $15/ hour minimum wage,” said Gabe Morgan, Pennsylvania Director of SEIU 32BJ, the largest property service workers union in the country. “Kenney represents Philadelphia’s best hope at beating back the income inequality that destroys our communities. His relentless commitment to fight this battle separates him from the pack.”

“The men and women who devote their lives to taking care of Philadelphians know that Jim Kenney will look out for their well-being,” said Neal Bisno, President of SEIU Healthcare PA, the state’s largest union of nurses and healthcare workers.

“I’m honored to have the support of such hardworking Philadelphians,” responded Kenney. “32BJ and Healthcare PA members take on some of the most difficult jobs in our society and too often are faced with disrespect and unfair conditions. As mayor, I’ll fight for the right of all Philadelphians to a living wage and safe, fair working environment.”
