PHL-15: Williams Fined for Excess Contributions

Anthony WilliamsAnthony Williams is the fundraising leader in the Philadelphia mayoral race. In fact, it turns out he has too much money.

According to Claudia Vargas of the Inquirer, Williams received $17,250 in excess campaign contributions.

That money will be given to the city instead of back to the donors. Additionally, Williams will have to pay fines of $8,000 for the violation and $10,000 to reimburse the city for the accountant they used.

The board also found that Williams transferred $67,927 from his previous State Senate campaign accounts. This type of move is prohibited and while he’ll get to keep that cash, he agreed not to use it for this campaign.

Despite these fees, Williams should be just fine financially. The support he has received from outside groups, especially in the form of TV ads, gives him a lot of room to breathe.

  1. Has anyone dug into the amount of Delaware County republican money this guy gathers? It will be a shame to allow him to be elected as a Democrat in Philadelphia since all he does as a supposedly Democratic State Senator is empower Republicans in Delaware County at the expense of Democratic gains in his district and beyond. The fracking money ($112,000 last year alone) paid to his wife and the education privatization money that is driving his campaign are only the tip of the iceberg with Anthony Williams — a sad day for Philadelphia and the region will come if this clown is elected Mayor. He does enough damage as a State Senator in the minority party in Harrisburg, giving him executive power in the strong mayor form of government in Philadelphia could be a catastrophe.

  2. What is abundantly clear is that Senator Williams and his team have big problems with “crusading” election commissioners that are so “committed” to ethics … betting he is behind the ballot challenge to Singer …

  3. I guess that puts Senator Williams’s campaign in the elite good government “ethics” club of Rene Tartaglione and Dr. Singer. I am surprised only that David is “surprised” about anything- “ironic” up to now he seems to be an “expert” at about just about everything.
At least it goes to the taxpayers.

  4. I think the other big news is that Philly has a Board of Ethics that actually can fine someone.

On the ironic side of “ethics”, they charged $10,000 for the time the accountant spent.

Accountant salaries in Philly area range from $60,000 to $90,000 per year. Did it really take 6 weeks to two months of full time accounting to find this?

I’m sure the Kenney campaign would have found this for free over a weekend.

  5. The guys from Susquehanna, who own huge blocks of stock in charter school profiteering companies, have Williams in their back pocket. A Williams Administration will make them many times over what they invest in his campaign. Smart investors, bad for the city and state.
