Pittsburgh Mayor: Wagner on the Air (With Video)

Jack Wagner is on the air today. His campaign unveiled its introductory ad in the former Auditor General’s run for Mayor. It’s a basic resume spot.

“What this race is about is taking Pittsburgh to another level. This is a clear choice. As City Council President, we passed one of the first assault weapons bans in the country. As Auditor General, we took on the Wall Street Banks,” says Wagner in a mix of talking to the camera and over b-roll of him meeting voters.

Wagner for mayor ad“We need to keep moving forward; create the jobs of the future; be an advocate for a strong educational system. Pittsburgh needs the kind of Mayor that provides leadership. That’s what I’ll do as Mayor of Pittsburgh.”

The ad was produced by Philadelphia-based firm Bronstein & Weaver. It’s a significant step up from the ‘small town used car dealership’-style ads of Wagner’s 2010 gubernatorial campaign.

Wagner’s campaign said it is airing mostly on broadcast with some cable. So far, just WPXI has posted the FEC-mandated details of the campaign’s details. Wagner is spending $19,000 on the NBC affiliate. They’re spending about $50,000 this week overall, a Wagner spokesman said.

Wagner’s long resume – he served as Auditor, a state Senator and a City Councilman – is his main selling point against City Councilman Bill Peduto.

The two have emerged as the most competitive candidates in the wake of Mayor Luke Ravenstahl’s decision not to seek re-election.

Peduto’s technocratic policy proposals are his relative strength.

The ad spending was made possible by a technicality in Pittsburgh’s campaign finance law which allowed Wagner to use money from his statewide campaigns (roughly $300,000) in the mayoral primary.

Peduto campaign spokeswoman Sonya Toler blasted Wagner and said the Councilman was planning to hit the air Friday.

“It’s not about who is first on the air; it’s about who has the know how and vision to transform Pittsburgh into a 21st-century city. Bill Peduto is committed to that cause. With Bill Peduto you get a leader who takes action; not an opportunistic candidate with shallow ideas,” she said.

  1. Wagner said he will seek a ban on all assault weapons if elected mayor. WOW! I wonder if Jack will also seek to restore business to the city and ban the litter that is piling up at light speed!

  2. Let’s film him in front of a bunch of microphones at a press conference looking like a typical politician who has been in office forever. now that’s a funny strategy. what are they thinking? maybe Wagner should have a press conference to announce he hired a new campaign team!

  3. This ad looks like it was done by a fifth-grader. intro ads like this for a candidate like Wagner will not move numbers. it’s basically a waste of money. apparently their media consultant has no idea what they are doing. wow. just wow. not smart at all. i think this shows that his team isn’t that smart.

  4. Let’s stop the nonsense. The provision of the campaign contributions law you were talking about was requested by Ravenstahl and other council members, not by Peduto. Look at Peduto’s bill that was vetoed by Ravenstahl in 2006 if you want to see Peduto’s (well written) proposal. The law that was passed was watered down by council at Ravenstahl’s request and resulted in a bill that was not well written.

  5. Josh Wander the tea bagged stand in for the GOP mayoral candidate brought his entire brood to partake in Pres Obama’s inauguration! He recently took down all the Facebook pictures he posted showing him having a grand old time celebrating Obama’s 2nd reign.

  6. Hasn’t Wagner and his family had enough? Get off the public’s teet already and get a real job. This guy is stale. What is this guy going to actually change? Nothing, he’ll keep it status quo. We need new candidates with fresh ideas in the Mayor’s office.

  7. I really like the feel of this commercial. I think its perfect for the Pittsburgh market. Good job Bronstein & Weaver!

  8. Actually, re: the campaign finance law, which the judge found to be shoddily written (by Peduto), the law required the limits to be lifted if any candidate at any time gave more than 50,000 of his own money to his campaign. That happpened with Mr. Lamb, as Mr. Peduto himself alleged. Thus, the judge had no choice but to enforce the law as it was written by Mr. Peduto..
