PoliticsPA’s Chiefs of Staff Spotlight: Scott Miller

At PoliticsPA, we love staffers as much as elected officials. That’s why we’re bringing you the second installment in our newest feature, Chief of Staff Spotlight. Each week, we’ll introduce you to one of the people who make the PA delegation possible.

We’ve chosen at random, and this week we present Scott Miller, Chief of Staff for Rep. Todd Platts (R-York).

Background:

What’s your name?

Scott Miller

Who is your boss?

Todd Platts

What is your birthday?

April 28, 1970

Where did you grow up?

York, Pennsylvania

Where did you go to college and what was your major?

York College of Pennsylvania, political science; Widener School of Law, Harrisburg

Professional:

What was your first political job?

Policy Director for Pennsylvania Senator Mike Waugh (R-York).

What was your biggest break in politics?

Volunteering for Todd’s first run for public office in 1992. He was elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives that year and I have continued to knock on doors for him every two years since.

How long have you worked for your boss?

Since his election to Congress.

What was your position when you first started in the office?

Legislative Director.

What’s the worst job outside of politics that you have ever had?

All the jobs I’ve had, from my first job as a grocery store clerk to being a law clerk for the state, have taught me important lessons. However, I must admit that the 8-hours per day of data entry that I worked between college and law school was very, very boring.

Personal:

What has been your proudest accomplishment/achievement since working on Capitol Hill?

As Chief of Staff, your accomplishments really come as being part of a team. I am proud that our team works every day to provide constituent service to the people of the 19th Congressional District, of the work we have done to highlight the issue of traumatic brain injury among troops returning home from Iraq and Afghanistan, and our efforts to strengthen oversight of federal spending with tighter financial controls at the Department of Homeland Security and whistleblower protections.

What is your favorite PA sports team?

I was actually more of a Baltimore Orioles fan, thanks to York being only an hour away from Camden Yards. During football season, I root for the Steelers.

Where and what do you eat lunch on most days?

The Rayburn cafeteria or Rayburn deli. Grilled chicken Caesar salad (no dressing) or a turkey sandwich.

Favorite “political” movie?

There aren’t really any political movies that have made much of an impression on me, but – politics notwithstanding – I am a huge fan of “The West Wing.” Season three is one of the best seasons of television ever.

Blackberry or I-Phone?

Blackberry Torch.

What political figure do you most admire (excluding your boss), and a sentence or two why?

Ronald Reagan. His leadership skills, good natured personality, strong convictions and moral imagination always inspired me.

What makes a Chief of Staff “good” and why? What advice would you give to aspiring Chiefs of Staff out there?

A Chief of Staff needs to listen as much as talk. A Chief of Staff needs to look out for his or her Member. Most of all, a Chief of Staff should always be reaching down to help others up.

One Response

  1. What activities are being conducted in your district to promote the presidential candidacy of Donald Trump? I have seen only one Trump sign in yards as I drive around the county.
