It still ain’t over.

Six days after all the votes have been cast in the primary, the race between Democratic lieutenant governor candidates Jonathan Saidel and state Rep. Scott Conklin appears headed for a recount, with fewer than 4,000 votes separating the two men as of last count.

Tallies provided by the Department of State, updated Monday morning, show the Centre County lawmaker leading 35.3 percent to 34.9 percent, a difference of 3,882 votes. The totals include 100 percent of precincts reported and are unofficial.

Recounts are triggered when the difference between the two candidates is less than one-half of 1 percent, which would be the case between Saidel and Conklin. The DOS secretary must decide whether to order a recount by Thursday 5 p.m., but only after asking the defeated candidate whether he or she wants to continue with one. If the candidate declines, the state does not undertake a recount.

A Saidel spokesman indicated the campaign will hold off on making a decision about a recount until the counties officially submit their vote tallies, which are due Tuesday afternoon.

“Still letting the process continue to work through until every vote is counted, tallied correctly and certified by the appropriate election authorities,” spokesman Marty Marks told PoliticsPA in an e-mail.
