UPDATE: The Fitzpatrick campaign confirmed Friday that it had raised $510,000 in the first fundraising quarter from more than 900 contributors.

“We must change the direction this congress is taking our country. Every cent we raise will help me spread our message of lower taxes to create American jobs and slashing government spending to begin reducing our massive debt,” Fitzpatrick said in a statement.

Congressional candidate Mike Fitzpatrick raised roughly $500,000 in the first two months of his race to unseat U.S. Rep. Patrick Murphy, a source from within the campaign tells PoliticsPA.

The total is likely to raise eyebrows among some political observers as Fitzpatrick tries to reclaim the 8th District seat he lost to Murphy in 2006.

Federal campaign finance reports are due next week, and a spokesman for the campaign, when asked about the fundraising in the first fiscal quarter, said only that it would reveal the total in the next few days. Although the first quarter includes the year’s first three months, Fitzpatrick declared in late January.

Fitzpatrick, though the favorite, faces three GOP candidates in the May 18 primary.
