The Arlen Specter campaign Tuesday unveiled a new ad that features actor Michael J. Fox, who famously suffers from Parkinson’s disease, asking voters to support the Democratic incumbent in the primary because of his support for medical research funding.

“The next discovery is right around the corner,” Fox says while looking into the camera during the 30-second spot. “That’s why we need Arlen Specter back in the Senate.

“He’s smart, tough and always moving forward,” Fox said.

The actor, who starred in such films as “Teen Wolf” and “Back to the Future,” has helped Specter before, cutting an ad during the 2004 general election when the then-Republican took on Democrat Joe Hoeffel.

Specter’s campaign manager declined to comment about the ad buy or which media markets the T.V. spot is running in.

The senator’s support for the National Institutes of Health has long been a key component of Specter’s pitch to voters, himself having battled Hodgkins’s disease twice.

Specter faces Democratic Joe Sestak in the May 18 primary. It’s the latest of a series of TV ads issued by his campaign in recent weeks, which have included spots that touted his ability to bring federal funding into the state and criticized Sestak’s record in congress and the Navy.
