Rumors that Chris Doherty might pair with Dan Onorato as the lieutenant governor on the Allegheny County executive’s gubernatorial ticket apparently picked up enough steam Monday to prompt an official response from Onorato’s campaign.

“While I have not and will not make it a habit to respond to rumors, I believe it is important for my supporters and the public to understand that the only race I have been focused on is my own campaign for governor — not who is running for Lt. Governor,” Onorato said in a statement. “The speculation that I – or anyone who can speak on my behalf – is negotiating with any candidates for Lt. Governor, declared or undeclared, is unfounded and untrue.

“Running for Governor is an enormous undertaking,” he continued. “That’s what my campaign and I are concentrating on. I hope this puts an end to any speculation out there.”

Democratic lieutenant governor candidate Jonathan Saidel has made it known he won’t remove himself from the field if Onorato or any other candidate strikes a deal for the position.
