Philadelphia attorney Michael Meehan was elected Thursday as the Republican Party’s southeast caucus chairman, sources tell PoliticsPA.

The position was vacant after former Delaware County GOP Chair Tom Judge stepped down earlier this year. Meehan had been legal counsel for the Philadelphia Republican Party.

An e-mail circulating among southeast Republicans, obtained by PoliticsPA, frames Meehan’s election as a victory over Chester County GOP Chairman Skip Brion and the man supporting him, noted GOP power-broker Bob Asher. The letter, the author of which is not identified, criticizes Asher for engaging in politics on for personal gain.

“The election of Meehan signifies a monumental changing of the guards in the southeast and begs the question: If Bob Asher has no power in the five counties, why would the rest of Pennsylvania give him a second thought?” the letter asks.

But Brion, in an interview with PoliticsPA, pushed back against the idea he was seeking the caucus chairmanship. He said he never talked with anyone, including Asher, about assuming the leadership post.

“So I was a little confused about reading Bob Asher supporting me as chairman,” he said, referring to the e-mail about the election circulating among GOP officials.

The Chester County GOP leader said he had wanted Judge to remain as caucus chairman until June. He didn’t think Meehan, whom he said he personally likes and respects, should lead the southeast caucus because he comes from a city with only 13 percent Republican registration.

“I was not convinced having a Philly guy as caucus chair was the right move at this time,” Brion said.

But he said nobody else sought the job, including himself. And he denied Meehan’s ascension means the southeast GOP now has a rift.

“Right now, the southeast caucus is unified behind a new leader,” he said.

Montgomery County GOP Chair Bob Kerns and Asher could not immediately  be reached for comment.

  1. Now that Meehan has some juice, he should do himself and SEPA a big favor by endorsing Joe Watkins as LG. That way he’d be putting the region and specifically Philly back on the GOP map.
