In the battle for Senate candidate Joe Sestak’s congressional seat, state Rep. Bryan Lentz (D-Swarthmore) picked up a key endorsement from the Pennsylvania State Council of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) earlier today.  Lentz is running against former U.S. Attorney Pat Meehan (R), in one of the state’s most high-profile races.

“Bryan is a strong, independent leader who will focus on creating jobs and protecting the rights of our working families,” Eileen Connelly, Executive Director of the State Council, said in the release. “As a legislator Bryan has always been a strong and consistent advocate for everyday people, and we at SEIU will be active, outspoken and determined advocates to help elect Bryan to Congress.”

March 24, 2010 – Citing his strong record of support for working families, the Pennsylvania State Council of the Service Employees International Union today announced its endorsement of Bryan Lentz for Congress in the 7thCongressional District.

“We are very proud to endorse Bryan Lentz as the best candidate to succeed Joe Sestak and continue to fight for the hard-working men and women of Pennsylvania’s 7th congressional district,” said Eileen Connelly, Executive Director of the State Council. “Bryan is a strong, independent leader who will focus on creating jobs and protecting the rights of our working families. As a legislator Bryan has always been a strong and consistent advocate for everyday people, and we at SEIU will be active, outspoken and determined advocates to help elect Bryan to Congress.”

“It is an honor to have the support of everyday working people and their families,” said Lentz. “Nobody works harder than the men and women of SEIU, and it is both motivating and inspiring to have their support as we fight against the political establishment for things like good paying jobs, affordable healthcare and improved education. It is important to remember that the status quo has nothing to gain from progress or reform and that the only way we can affect positive change is to get active, get involved and make our voices heard. That is why the support of SEIU is so important to my campaign and so important to the success and fairness of our shared future.”

The SEIU Pennsylvania State Council represents nearly 100,000 members statewide in the areas of health care, public services, building services and hospitality.  It is the fastest-growing union in the state, and represents approximately 2,000 members in the 7th Congressional District.
