UPDATE: Kirkland later Tuesday withdrew his endorsement of Sestak, instead opting to become neutral in the U.S. Senate primary, according to a report from PA Public Radio’s Scott Detrow.

The state lawmaker told Detrow in an interview, “I need to be neutral — I respect them both,” despite only minutes earlier participating in a conference call touting the congressman as the best choice in the primary.

The withdrawal seemed to catch Sestak by surprise.

“Look – I do understand, running against the establishment, that things can get a little hard out there,” Sestak told Detrow. “But I don’t know what happened, in this case.”

Thaddeus Kirkland, a state lawmaker from Delaware County who previously supported Arlen Specter, will endorse Joe Sestak on Tuesday in Harrisburg, according to the Democratic U.S. Senate challenger’s campaign.

Kirkland will officially switch his support at a Sestak event in the Capital city at 2 p.m.

The move to switch support is a highly unusual one for any public official, much less in such a high-profile race. But it could be indicative of the fact that in a contest many analysts once thought was Specter’s to lose, Sestak has surged ahead in several polls just a week before the May 18 primary. Sestak is leading the incumbent by 4 points, according to a tracking poll released Tuesday.

The lawmaker also represents parts of the same area as Sestak in southeast Pennsylvania.

Kirkland was still listed as a member of Specter’s statewide “advisory board” Tuesday morning.
