State Senator Anthony Williams has raised $500,000 only a day after forming his gubernatorial campaign committee, he told reporters this Friday at the Democratic Party’s winter meeting.
The senator hasn‘t decided if he’ll run for governor yet, but the formation of the committee is another step toward a campaign.
The senator also took the stage during Friday’s gubernatorial candidate’s forum, which featured the four Democrats officially running for the gubernatorial nomination: Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato, Auditor General Jack Wagner, Scranton Mayor Chris Doherty, and Montgomery County Commissioner Joe Hoeffel.
Williams, an African-American from Philadelphia, has said he considering a run because the field thus far hasn‘t talked about what he considers the issues plaguing Pennsylvania, such as inner-city poverty and gun control. The state senator said he hopes his run, or at least the threat of his run, will force the other campaigns to address those issues.
“So if (I don’t run, hopefully there will be a candidate on the Democratic side who will talk about those issues,” he said.
