Potential Senate Rival Rohrer Commends Smith

By Keegan Gibson, Managing Editor

Senate candidate and coal industry veteran Tom Smith is received praise from an unlikely source today: former Pa. Rep. Sam Rohrer, who sources say is all but certain to join the race for U.S. Senate against Bob Casey.

A press release from Americans for Prosperity’s PA chapter today commended Smith for a pledge he took today against any form of tax on carbon emissions. Rohrer, who also ran for governor in 2010, is the group’s leader and is listed as the press contact in the release.

“The Pennsylvania chapter of the free market grassroots group Americans for Prosperity (AFP-PA) today applauded U.S. Senate candidate Tom Smith for signing the group’s ‘No Climate Tax Pledge,’” the release said. “Smith joins more than 570 bipartisan lawmakers and candidates on the federal, state and local levels pledging to ‘oppose legislation relating to climate change that includes a net increase in government revenue.’”

The pledge itself states “I, Tom Smith, pledge to the people of Pennsylvania and to the American people that I will oppose any legislation relating to climate change that includes a net increase in government revenue.”

“It was a very easy decision to sign on to this pledge. Any time unnecessary taxes are imposed on people I will oppose them.” said Smith in a statement.

Indeed it was – Smith managed a mid-sized coal mining operation for most of his career.

  1. The commercial for Tom Smith stating PA has been destroyed by Obama and Casey – could I have some specifics on this statement.

President Obama has tried tirelessly thru the past 3 years to deal with conservative selfish Republicans to no avail. Who has destroyed our country – not just PA – are the Reoublicans – George Bush and Dick Cheney at the top of the list.

Please have this commercial removed from the air waves – it is a lie, and I certainly will correct this lie to all I speak with.

Let’s move forward and stop bashing others – thats easy to do when they can’t reply – be an adult – tell the truth – it would be refreshing.

  2. And while absent when the vote was taken on HB 2200 which ultimatly was to become ACT 129 of 2008, Pennsylvania’s version of Cap and Trade, he has not spoken out against it and American’s for Prosperity has not called for it’s repeal.

  3. Too bad Sam Rohrer doesn’t know that John Vernon already signed the American for Tax Reform pledge and the Contract from America.

Sam doesn’t mention that Smith was a democrat until about 6 weeks ago and donated to Jason Altmire and hasn’t donated to Republican challenger Keith Rothfus. And, while a democrat donated to Republicans.

Now how can Sam run against Smith?

  4. That’s a shocker – you mean a man who hates the EPA and got rich mining coal is opposed to taxing carbon emissions? After using his grandchildren as props to talk about his concern for their future, he sure doesn’t seem to care about their future health or ability to enjoy our planet.
