PPP Poll: Republicans Not Sold on Corbett

081025_gop_logoA new poll released Tuesday by Public Policy Polling brought a lot of bad news for Governor Corbett, yet perhaps the most surprising revelation concerned his popularity among Pennsylvania Republican voters.

Republican voters narrowly disapprove of Corbett’s job performance, 45% to 41%.

The Governor’s job approval among moderate Republicans is only 31% while 58% disapprove. Gov. Corbett still has positive approval ratings with self-identified somewhat conservative voters (49% to 38%) and very conservative voters (48% to 33%).

Of the Republicans primary voters polled, only 42% said they support having Corbett be the gubernatorial nominee next year. 47%, on the other hand, responded that they would prefer someone else.

Of those surveyed, 57% of moderate Republicans prefer another nominee while 50% of very conservative Republicans prefer to keep Gov. Corbett.

PPP tested Corbett against two Republican Congressman who have been named as possible alternatives: Jim Gerlach (R-Chester) and Mike Kelly (R-Butler). Neither has given any indication that they are considering or in any way open to a direct challenge of Corbett.

Corbett led both challengers 42% to 31%. A quarter of voters answered not sure.

It is a bad sign for an incumbent to be under 50% in a head-to-head matchup as the lesser known challenger is thought to have more room to grow.

Reps. Gerlach and Kelly did not have high name ID among statewide GOP voters.

Rep. Gerlach’s favorability was at 10%, while 15% of people had an unfavorable opinion of him. 74% were unsure.

16% of respondents have a favorable opinion of Rep. Kelly, 10% have an unfavorable opinion, and 70% were unsure.

PPP tested both Congressmen against the Democratic gubernatorial front runner Allyson Schwartz (D-Montgomery). She led Gerlach 39% to 31% and Kelly 41% to 33%.

Among the full sample of registered voters surveyed by PPP (Dem, GOP and Indy), Gerlach was viewed unfavorably 19% to 10% and Kelly was viewed unfavorably 18% to 15%.

If there is one silver lining for the Gov. Corbett, however, it is that the core base of the party still supports him. His approval numbers with somewhat conservative (49%) and very conservative (48%) voters are his strongest. Those who lose primary challenges generally tend to be those who lose the most fervent part of their party’s base.

PPP surveyed 491 Republican primary voters from Nov. 22 to 25 via IVR. The margin of error is plus or minus 4.4%.

Note: Tuesday’s PPP survey announcement includes 3 samples: 1 of registered voters, one of Democrats, and one of Republicans. This article primarily cites figures from the survey of Republicans.

  1. The deafening silence regarding events in the PAGOP MONTCO is disturbing! Are SEPA PAGOP Cavegirls really nothing but the loyal bagmen of the politics of days gone by? But these PAGOP SEPA Cavegirls have prettier smiles, show more cleavage, and have better legs than the bagmen of old. I am just blog commenter, and it is well above my pay grade to lead a liberation of the SEPA PAGOP Cavegirls. I call upon Ana Puig, to replace Baby Caveman Mike Vereb as PAGOP MONTCO Chairwoman. Ms. Puig: Ana, you know oppression when you see it. It is time to suit up! Subject:Tea-party celebrity joins Pa. Revenue Department – Philly.com

  3. PAGOP ANSTINE WOMAN: Just close your eyes as your fearless leader Governor Tom Corbett commanded to the hypocritical misogyny of SEPA PAGOP caveman like former MONTCO Chair Bob Kerns and new MONTCO Chair BABY CAVEMAN Mike Vereb. Is it worth keeping silent about the tasteless behavior of your GOP Cavemen just to get an invitation to PA Rep. Mike Vereb’s audaciously awesome CAPITOL New Year’s Eve Fest? http://youtu.be/uiRjVFm779o

  4. In the GOP OF MONTCO, are women merely considered XMAS ornaments? Isn’t the time arrived that the women of the PAGOP spoke out against Kerns and MONTCO’s new Baby Caveman MONTCO CHAIR Mike Vereb? Christine Toretti, COS Gromis-Baker, and Suzy Corbett, get some courage and speak out against SEPA GOP Cavemen. Why would any donor that is serious about winning give money to the Anstine program to perpetuate this cowardly behavior? Does the Anstine program offer a course on political courage? 5. Tom Corbett’s approve/disapprove numbers among “very conservative voters (48% to 33%)” gives us the percentage of low information “very conservative” voters.

Informed conservative voters disapprove of the “vague” Tom Corbett.

  6. Dear MONTCO PAGOP Chair Mike Vereb and sometime Senator Mike Vereb: My Holiday calender is filling up. Please send me an invitation to your New Year’s Capitol Party where SEPA GOP Cavemen party like its 2014 BC. Do any GOP Corporate Welfare Queens attend your Fest? I’ll bring some SEPA swing Soccer Moms and even make a contribution to the Bob Kerns legal defense fund. Former Montco GOP chief charged with rape
