PPP Poll: The Immortal Question, Eagles or Steelers?

football fieldWith Thanksgiving coming up, Public Policy Polling decided to ask the people of PA about the most important topic at this time of the year: football. But PPP didn’t stop there, providing a revealing look at the popularity of sports teams in the state and the coaches that run them.

To begin, they polled the state for an answer to the question that has been debated throughout the commonwealth for decades; Eagles or Steelers? According to PPP, the black and gold come out ahead by a 48% to 28% margin with 25% inexplicably answering “Not sure/Another team”.

Even more enlightening, however, were the results when each team’s fanbase was asked about their head coach. New coach Chip Kelly of the Philadelphia Eagles scored an impressive 76% approval with only 4% disapproving.

Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin, who has struggled this season despite past success, still maintains a 56% approval rating with 23% of fans disapproving of his performance. When asked whether Tomlin should return or be fired, Steelers fans asserted that they wanted the Super Bowl-winning coach to stay by a 61% to 20% margin.

It also appears that the first winning season for the Pittsburgh Pirates in over twenty years has returned them to the state’s good graces. 34% of PA residents cited them as their favorite baseball team while the Phillies were chosen by 28%. The Yankees and Orioles finished with 10% and 8% respectively.

Finally, college football fans were asked about their favorite team. Penn State, despite recent turbulence, remains the state’s most favored squad receiving 47%. Pitt came in second with 20% while Temple finished third with 11%. Both PSU and Pitt fans had high opinions of head coaches Bill O’Brien (83% approval rating) and Paul Chryst (70% approval rating).
