Pro-Romney Super PAC Purchases Olympic Airtime

The conservative super PAC Restore Our Future announced that it will launch a $7.2 million ad buy to support Mitt Romney during the London Olympics.

The ad will air in 11 states total, including potential battleground state Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Formerly a blue-leaning state, the Governor recall election has since put Dems on edge – to the GOP’s advantage. The other nine are swing states: Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Michigan, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio and Virginia.

While Restore Our Future did not comment on the content of the ad buy, it will most surely center around Romney’s role in salvaging the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.

Restore Our Future Treasurer Charlie Spies made this statement on Thursday, as reported by ABC News:

Ten years ago, Mitt Romney rescued the Salt Lake City Olympics from scandal and financial ruin, transforming a crushing deficit into a surplus and delivering a safe and secure Olympics less than a year after September 11. Mitt Romney is a proven leader who is capable of turning our economy around and creating an environment where we can once again realize the
American Dream.

A backward glance at some of the super PAC’s campaign handiwork also allows for speculation about the coming ads. The super PAC was responsible for an ad this past winter that told the story of how Romney helped search for and rescue the missing 14-year-old daughter of a Bain Capital worker.

The Obama campaign may be pouring money into an effort to villainize Romney and put in question his business practices, but Restore Our Future is retaliating and the message is clear: Romney put his multibillion dollar company on hold to save a child. He saved the Salt Lake City Olympics. Now he’s going to save America. See, he’s not an aloof Richie-Rich knockoff after all.

News of the ad buy came several days after the New York Times broke the story that Obama’s reelection campaign is spending $6.5 million on ads that will air during the Games.

The pro-Romney ads are to begin airing July 31 and run through August 9. Romney will also be making the trip to London to attend the Games with his wife, Ann.
