Candidates had to show their fundraising cards today and Rep. Keith Rothfus (R-Allegheny) laid down a full house.
Rothfus raised $381,482.66 leaving him with $750,650.06 on hand for the race to keep his seat. He won by a slim margin in 2012, defeating then-incumbent Mark Critz. In 2014, he will face the winner of a Democratic primary between Erin McClelland and John Hugya.
Last quarter, Rothfus raised $227,623.00 and in the first quarter he brought in $263,123.53, making Q3 his biggest of the year. Without a challenger on the horizon, Rothfus will likely retain a large amount of cash through the primary to focus on his general opponent.
McClelland’s report has not yet been posted by the FEC. Hugya, on the other hand, submitted his report earlier in the day but after raising only $225 this quarter, it must not have taken long to prepare the report. To be fair, Hugya was the most recent entry to the race.
Update: This afternoon, Democratic candidate Erin McClelland released her FEC report. She raised $22,080 over the months of July, August, and September. The campaign also spent $15,221 over that time and currently has $71,977 cash on hand. It appears that those waiting to see if former Rep. Mark Critz would jump in decided to stay out after he chose to run for Lt. Governor instead.

Ms. Foster –
Please consider revising your article to reflect that Rothfus DOES have a primary challenger in Larry Stiles. See link below:

The reporter for this story fails to mention that a majority of Keith’s money comes from other Republican officeholders. Keith is on the Republican National Committee’s list of most doomed candidates so all the other Republican Congressman are tithing to Keith to make the GOP party bosses happy. Thats what gave him the boost – help from his Tea Party colleagues. But Keith is doomed. Take a look at the latest poll showing Keith at a 30 percent approval rating. No amount of money can bail him out of his sinking Tea Party ship of fools.
Congratulations to the Congressman. It is a tribute to taking his campaign pledges seriously and doing what he was elected to do for the people. As a voter in his district I appreciate a Congressman who gives more than lip service to saving the next generation’s wealth and protecting us from a government takeover of the medical industry.
Tea Party guys like Rothfus are going to need lots and lots of money if they expect to survive next year.
Colonel Hugya beats left wing fringe candidate McCleland with no money. I think we are learning the reality of that.
That’s definitely a strong quarter. But humongous? I don’t think so.
