Q4: Shuster Brings in 550k

Rep. Bill Shuster (R-Blair) raised $550,000 in the fourth quarter of last year, leaving the incumbent with $1.359 million on hand.

“Congressman Shuster’s efforts on the ground are reinforced by the amount of financial support he has received,” said Sean Joyce, spokesman for the Shuster campaign. “Our 4th quarter numbers only strengthen the point that voters of the 9th Congressional District continue to support Bill Shuster, and are proud to have a proven conservative leader representing them in Congress. The successful fundraising emphasizes the grassroots backing the Shuster campaign witnessed last week as several hundred supporters braved the freezing temperatures and snow-covered roads to join the campaign kick-off tour.”

These numbers dwarf his fundraising in the third quarter, Shuster raised over $350,000 and spent just over $131,000 during the quarter, leaving him with about $1.1 million on hand.

The announcement of his fourth quarter haul comes on the heels of his reelection bus tour, where he visited 12 counties in four days.

Shuster faces challenger Art Halvorson, running as a Tea Party insurgent, for his seat in the GOP primary.

Just this morning, Halvorson tweeted: “Why hasn’t Bill Shuster filed this 4th-quarter FEC report? Delaying release of some ‘under-performing’ news perhaps?”

Apparently not.

According to Halvorson’s own Federal Election Commission (FEC) report, he has only raised $152,604.92 in his efforts to capture the Republican nomination in Pennsylvania’s 9th congressional district. Of that, $100,000 came in the form of a loan to his campaign. He has $72,398.64 currently on hand.

The district is considered to be a strongly Republican one, as Cook Political Report rated it R+14. So far, there is no announced Democratic candidate.

  1. Frank Travis isn’t campaigning and he hasn’t even filed an FEC report. He also is a failed 3 time candidate with very few qualifications. Art is on the ground on a daily basis and he has several people working for him. Travis needs to back Art. Shuster’s campaign manager doesn’t mention the $15,000 from the United Transportation Union he raised this quarter. He has also took money from Berkshire Hathaway in the past and a number of different transportation Unions.

  2. Who does Bill serve the special interests that give him money or does he serve the people of the 9th district?

  3. Oh yeah, and if Bill and his toadie Frank Sollenberger are so sure that Art Halvorson isn’t a threat, why is Bill afraid to debate him? The Blair County Republican Women planned a candidates’ night over two months in advance and invited everyone (including Schooley), but Bill refused to come.

Sure doesn’t sound like “conservative leadership” to me…

  4. I’d be interested to know how much of this money was actually given by regular people who live in the 9th District. Probably not much, if any. A lot of construction & transportation special interests are very dependent on the government contracts Bill steers their way and will pay handsomely to keep him in office.

And the “hundreds of supporters” they say showed up for his bus tour is a total lie. There were less than 20 in attendance when he stopped in Blair County.

  5. I have to laugh. Halvorson’s twitter account was essentially calling out Shuster for not having released his Q4 numbers. Implying that his fundraising was tailing off. Well Art, ask and you shall receive.

    2 options left:

    1) loan yourself another 100k and supplement your weakening campaign. . . Again.

    2) Drop out and endorse Travis Schooley. He can’t possibly be doing worse than you at this point. I’m sure your fair weather supporters are looking for a ship to jump to right about now anyway.
