Reader Poll: Do You Approve of Wolf’s Removal of SRC Chair?

school district of phillyThere’s a reason why news doesn’t usually break on Sunday night. If it does happens, it tends to mean something unexpected has occurred.

This weekend, that something was the removal of Bill Green as the School Reform Commission’s Chairman by Governor Wolf.

The move was so sudden, Green leaked it to the press before the Governor could even announce it.

The SRC oversees Philadelphia’s troubled schools and is made up of members appointed by both the Governor and the city’s mayor.

Supporters see Wolf’s action as within his authority and a simple case of the Gov. finding the person he wanted in charge. Opponents view Green’s removal, coupled with the firing of Erik Arneson in January, as heavy-handed and even illegal political maneuvers.

So, we ask you our dear readers, do you approve of the Governor’s action?

Do you approve of Governor Wolf removing Bill Green as SRC Chair?

  1. Of course he must be purged. The Party has spoken, and he is a backslider who wants to give students trapped in Philadelphia an education. How could be explain that at PFT Headquarters?

  2. It is essential that Philadelphia return to a system of education that works for the people who are at the bottom!

We must stop trying to use public education funding as a incubator for selective schools and lottery type pretenses at funding a system that will benefit only those running the schools. We cannot continue to allow so many to be left to dream about being selected to attend the funded schools even as they are left to a system that strips the rest of the unselected children of the basics.

All Governors who are responsible for the funding should have their opportunity to pick people who have their philosophy as their mandate arises from elections and should not be for the benefit of the few.

  3. The Governor gets to pick his team & the Chair is appointed by the Governor. It’s a graceless and arrogant of Green to make this about him having his elevated position – rather than the work. Which he still has responsibility for as a Commissioner.

Take your ball and go home Billy; I think your mother’s calling.

  4. DELCO, I might be inclined to agree with you except I took a minute to listen to the Commissioner’s comments and reasoning in his own words. I think fair-minded individuals would come to the opposite conclusion you did.

I just don’t see how the benefit-cost math is in the Governor’s favor on this one. Seems like a Kathleen Kane maneuver. Time will tell.

  5. Bill Green really appears to be a self-righteous, arrogant, self-important boob…he is making this about him and his power and is refusing to accept that the focus of public education is to make public schools better for everyone, not line the pockets of the for-profit charter school owners and the education industrial complex. Let Governor Wolf implement his plan…it is why the majority of pennsylvanians voted for him…only former Governor Corbett voted for Bill Green…enough said!

  6. We have a new Governor. Let him pick who he wants to work for him. He wants people who will be loyal to him and I agree with that!
