Reader Poll: PA Judges Should be Appointed

PA Supreme Court2015 is a big year for judicial elections.

Nevertheless, a majority of our readers feel we shouldn’t even have judicial elections in the first place.

As we discussed last week, PA is one of 39 states to have some form of elective judiciary. In fact, the Keystone State is one of only seven states to vote on Supreme Court candidates.

Therefore, we decided to ask our readers whether they prefer judges who are appointed or elected.

456 respondents chose appointment while 425 readers preferred elections.

The full results are included below:

Should Pennsylvania’s judges be appointed or elected?

  • Appointed (52%)
  • Elected (48%)

Total Voters: 881

  1. I think election of Judges is ok but perhaps make them nonpartisan elections so voters are choosing the Judge with the best ideas not by political party affiliation

  2. Pennsylvania tried merit selection in the mid-nineteenth century and guess what; it did not last because of partisanship.
