Reader Poll: Should Rob McCord run for Governor?

As time ticks closer to the May 2014 primary race for governor, Gov. Tom Corbett seems to become more and more vulnerable according to the latest polling data. Yet as Corbett’s chances decline, the Democratic primary field continues to get more and more cluttered.

In a Sept. 3 interview, State Treasurer Rob McCord hinted at a possible run for Governor. A McCord run seems even more likely as the potential candidate’s camp recently hired the former campaign manager for Attorney General Kathleen Kane, Sadie Sterner-Restivo.

McCord holds a potential advantage as he has already been able to win statewide office. Yet his incremental entry may have allowed others to seize the initiative.

If McCord announces, he’ll join an already-stacked lineup of Democratic contenders: former Secretaries of the Department of Environmental Protection John Hanger and Katie McGinty, Rep. Allyson Schwartz and former Department of Revenue Secretary Tom Wolf.

So, we ask you, do you think Rob McCord should join the race?

  1. If I were a Democrat I would want McCord or Wagner. They can win statewide. Schwartz will get bogged down defending herself.

  2. He absolutely should run and he will beat Corbett. Allyson is fine as a Congresswoman, but the state has rejected her before and will again. She should save her money and her friends’ money and drop out.

And I agree – 95% of those voting no – work for the 7 (or whatever the last count is) other candidates big and small.

  3. The 39% voting no are the intelligent people who realize that by continuosly adding more people to this primary increases the chances of getting some out of the blue random candidate the wont be able to fundraise or hold up in the general AND by adding more candidates we are only increase the blood bath the will ensue and leave the winner of the primary weak and with no money. Please Rob, stay out

  4. By all means run for governor. Hanger and McGinty don’t have a chance, Schwartz is just going to be Corbett-lite, and Wolf is parroting the same corporate talking points we’ve been listening to from Corbett. We need a clear voice of reason and someone who will represent the best interest for the people in PA, and not their corporate ‘special interests’. This is especially true on the issue of unconventional shale gas extraction. The democrat party passed a common sense resolution for a moratorium until independent public health and environmental studies could be completed. Too many people have already been harmed in PA and it’s time to put on the brakes. If Rob McCord has the guts to stand by his party’s resolution and sign a moratorium bill – that 75% of the people of PA now support, he could be our next governor. He would certainly get my vote, and I would vigorously and enthusiastically campaign for him in NEPA, as I’m sure many others would.

  5. “McCord holds a potential advantage as he has already been able to win statewide office.” This isn’t a “potential” advantage; it’s a significant advantage.

  6. 1 liberal from the east is enough. stay state treasure and keep people posted about unclaimed property.what a joke
