Amazon announced it is looking for a city to open a new corporate headquarters in, and put the call out for cities to pitch themselves to the company. So we want to know, which of Pennsylvania’s two major cities the company should choose.
Both Philadelphia and Pittsburgh have been viewed as possible cities for the company to choose, and both have considered putting bids in to get the headquarters.
So we want to know, if Amazon were to pick a Pennsylvania city, should it be Philadelphia or Pittsburgh?
Where should Amazon put its new corporate headquarters?
- Philadelphia (36%)
- Pittsburgh (36%)
- Somewhere else (27%)

Allentown and the Lehigh Valley is the logical choice. It is close to both New York City and Philadelphia. It also has two1,000,000 ft.² Amazon warehouses and they Lehigh Valley International Airport is the key airport for northeast US distribution of goods. The Lehigh Valley is a major growth area and is serviced by major interstates and the Pennsylvania Turnpike.
Not even close. Pittsburgh has the tech infrastructure and support. The airport can be ramped up. Cost of living is manageable. Philly wage tax and anti business actions coming from city hall not exactly a welcome mat. But really, they should go to state college.
Bribery costs are higher in Philadelphia. Besides, who would want to live there that isn’t stuck there already?
What’s wrong with south central PA? Amazon already has a facility in Carlisle. Why not expand that and take advantage of out transportation accessibility and less expensive business operations.
I love pipelines, development and the prospect of Amazon coming to Philly. Build baby build.
PA blows. AMZN to Nashville. Go Preds. Pens suck.

Marcus Hook! No brainer
But Charlie, there are no other areas of the state that can even come close to satisfying the criteria that Amazon has laid out for the HQ2 project. Only Philadelphia and the Pittsburgh area have in excess of 1 million people…and Pittsburgh has to do an all encompassing sweep of Allegheny County to get to 1.2 million. Philadelphia has 1.5 million by itself. The “Delaware Valley” SMSA has over 6 million people. This is a crucial component of available workforce.
PA is 46,055 square miles. Philly is 142 square miles. Pittsburgh is 58. I can imagine some other areas of the state needing an economic boost.
Not that fit the requirements laid out by Amazon. They even put out a list of 39 locations they were looking at. Phila and Pitt were on it.
Yeah I’m sure Amazon will get right on opening their second headquarters in Sayre or Oil City.
Nothing says “build here” like Intercourse PA.
