Reader Poll: Who Will Control the State Senate?

PA_State_Senate_districts_by_party_svgThe State Senate has been a Republican stronghold for years, but Democrats believe this could be their year to finally become the majority.

The current composition of the upper chamber gives the GOP a four seat advantage (27 to 23) but with Tom Wolf holding a solid lead in the Governor’s race, his party is hoping his coattails are long enough to drag in the sufficient number of Senators to hand the chamber to the Dems.

To accomplish this, though, the Democrats would have to prevail in a number of closely contested races. As broken down by Thomas Fitzgerald of the Philadelphia Inquirer, the current Democratic plan is to hold two seats in Western PA (which is becoming more conservative) and pick up three seats in Eastern PA (which is becoming more progressive).

This will be a tough task for Democrats, the equivalent of drawing a straight flush in poker. Still, the Dems believe a blue wave led by Wolf would provide enough momentum to pull off just such a feat.

Republicans counter that the incumbency advantage, as well as the tendency for midterm electorates to lean more conservative than presidential electorates, favors the GOP.

So, we ask you our dear readers, which party will control the State Senate after the November elections?

  1. PhillyBoy – you need some historical perspective. Are you old enough to vote? If you are, then surely you remember the Bush years and are old enough to have learned about a few presidents such as Warren G. Harding, Millard Fillmore, and James Buchanan. Pipe down, boy, the adults are talking.

  2. Think the R’s add a seat . . . 28-22. Still not a ‘functioning majority’ w/ several SEPA moderates who won’t support conservative initiatives, and several ultra conservatives who are against pretty much anything that relates to government or spending.

  3. Democrats already control the senate. Union republicans are just as good as democrats. All they’re fighting for now is the name.

  4. If there was a way to prove it I would bet a great sum of money that Governor Corbutt has had more limousine ride than future the future Governor…at taxpayers’ expense!

  5. Better watch out in Pa-50. Michael Muha has been crossing the entire 50th district. People who I’ve talked to are tired of career politicians such as Rep. Michelle Brooks. This race is going to shock some people. Its a lot closer than some people think. Lots of dissatisfied republicans up here in mercer and crawford counties crossing over to vote for Wolf and Muha.

  6. Its pay back time Democrats !.. your affirmative action President has done damage to our constitutiuon and economy all in the name of social change . The vast majority of Americans are fed up with Obama’s lack of leadership, lawlessness and lies.Obama is uncomforatble in his own skin as POTUS and it shows everyday,
Obama is thee worst President in the history of this nation. THEREFORE….
Americans that care will pull the R lever this November and say NO toTom Wolf the limousine liberal who has guaranteed to raise all of are taxes .
