Reader Poll: Who Would You Support in the 2016 Democratic Senate Primary?

Joe-Sestak-headshotThe 2016 Democratic Senate primary was supposed to be one of the most high-profile races in the commonwealth.

Then Kathleen Kane’s political prospects began to unravel.

Numerous potential opponents decide to sit the race out and it looked as though Joe Sestak would easily walk to a rematch with Senator Toomey.

Recently, however, some possible Democratic challengers have emerged.

Former Congressman Chris Carney announced last month he is “weighing” a potential bid.

Then, a few days later we revealed State Senator Vincent Hughes had registered a number of website domain names indicating he is also considering a run.

So we decided to ask you, our dear readers, who would you favor in a Sestak-Carney-Hughes race?

Who would you vote for in the 2016 Democratic Senate Primary?

  • Chris Carney (41%)
  • Joe Sestak (31%)
  • Vince Hughes (27%)

  1. Joe Sestak can definitely win providing the democratic party supports him in the general election. Matter of fact any democrat can defeat Toomey providing the party itself actually supports the candidate who wins the primary election. The reason democrats are losing is because those running the democratic party fail to support candidates in incumbent republican districts. The party concentrates solely on new positions; their favorites already in office who will win; and a select few of republican area’s they hate personally. If you’re a democrat don’t send your money to the party, send it to the candidate you want to win. If you send it to the party, that money will be used to support someone in Alaska instead of the candidate in Pennsylvania. At least the candidate you want to win will actually get your money & full support. Joe Sestak is the best democratic candidate and will be the best candidate for the office. Sestak has excellent qualifications and will work hard for veterans and everyone in Pennsylvania. He will vote for what is good for everyone in the United States, not for the gigantic foolish satire groups running DC now.

  2. Lois-

A leopard doesn’t change its spots. Sestak’s just gotten a little better at hiding his contempt for all the other candidates, whom he will sellout at the drop of a hat. He does “show up” a lot, but that’s to use the local candidates to provide him a forum. Don’t be fooled. He still lives in Virginia, with his wife/kid, just like Santorum.

  3. Carney would be a fantastic candidate to challenge Sestak and especially Toomey. Sestak has been running for this seat since the day after he lost to Toomey in 2010. By contrast, Carney started his own business and for the last two years has been a federal commissioner on the bipartisan Military Compensation Modernization Commission, being appointed by the President and Congress. He also worked on Governor Wolf’s transition team. Can Sestak say the same? I really respect Admiral Sestak’s service, but Commander Carney continues to serve Pennsylvania and the nation since leaving office. To say Chris has been “largely absent” is neither true nor fair. We Democrats should be proud to support Chris Carney.

  4. Chris Carney would make a great candidate. I would support him to the very end. But Admiral Sestak is, IMHO, a better choice right now. He has spent numerous hours and days on the road, working with county committees and other candidates, to get Dems elected. Chris has been largely absent (but that can be forgiven under most circumstances), so there’s the whole name/face recognition thing across the state. For now, I’m gonna Go With Joe!

  5. Got an e-mail today to this link from one of Carney’s former staffers. He was my congressman until he was wrongly taken out by Tom “Casino Marino”. I absolutely adore Chris Carney. The man actually gives a crap…but I can say the same thing about Joe Sestak. I was a Specter supporter last time around, but I have spent time and gotten to know Joe since then, and at this point I can’t imagine anyone else being our party’s nominee. People can say what they wish about the Admiral – and that’s your own opinion – by my opinion, based on fact, says that the man can win. I hate to say it, but compared to Carney (and especially Hughes), comparatively people know Sestak more than them. Nobody is better prepared to be in the US Senate other than Joe Sestak. He surprised us once, and he will do it again. But while my vote will be for Joe during the primary, I certainly stand willing to support Chris Carney should he run. Vince Hughes, please don’t do it!

  6. In recent years, Sestak has helped many candidates in PA and shown that he cares about electing Democrats, not just himself. I used to think he was all about himself but have changed my mind and believe he is the candidate of these three who will work the hardest for the Democratic ticket and be our best advocate once elected.

  7. Sestak will lose the general election due to his arrogance and history as a bad employer/boss. If the Democrats want six more years of Toomey, sure, nominate Sestak.

  8. Oh wow a Politicspa reader poll, will it tells us nothing? Yes! Will there be a follow up story imlplying the results are important? Yes! Will a Politicspa reader poll tell you anything about politics anywhere? No! Will Politicspa keep doing them? Probably, but one can hope not

  10. How about Schwartz? How about Nutter? How about Shapiro? Anybody but Sestak though, please.

  11. The post below is a fake post. However, even a dead cat would do a better job than either Toomey or Sestak.
