Rendell Lays Out Convention Scenario, Offends Sanders Supporters

EdRendellThe Democratic Party is trying to unite.

The problem is that the presidential primary contest isn’t over yet.

While Bernie Sanders faces incredibly long odds, his supporters are still fervently making their case for him and this has Democratic leaders like Ed Rendell a little concerned. Rendell is a former Philly Mayor, PA Governor, DNC Chair and a long-time Clinton supporter so his view is particularly important as it comes to how the “establishment” plans to handle the DNC Convention.

In a radio interview this week, Rendell signaled that the party plans to let Sanders’ supporters have their moment but also stated that they should behave themselves.

“I think it’s gonna be a great convention, but of course the key to it is the Sanders people,” Rendell stated. “Bernie’s gonna have his name placed in nomination; we’re gonna have a roll call; there’s gonna be a demonstration in support of Bernie; he’s gonna lose the roll call. His supporters have to behave and not cause trouble. And I think they will, and I think Sen. Sanders will send them a strong message.”

The admonition that Sanders’ people “behave” outraged several Bernie backers to the point where Rendell posted a statement on Facebook explaining his comments.

One point that got lost in this discussion, though, is that there will be a roll call at the convention. In 2008, this issue was a sticking point between the Obama and Clinton teams. Ultimately, Clinton herself suspended the roll call and asked for the nomination to be unanimous.

It remains to be seen whether history will repeat itself in Philadelphia this July.

  3. Hey Fast Eddie, you got a lot of nerve tellin Sanders people to behave when they come to Philly. Aren’t you the one who publically walked around town with Blonde Arm Candy while still married?

  4. Steve Todd, after coming in 5th in your district for delegate selection in a strong Hillary district can you really still call yourself a candidate? That implies you still have a chance. I guess it’s like any good Bernie support. Holding on to faith over science. You’d make a great republican.

  5. This article feeds the idea that the DNC is rigged against anyone but Clinton. Even though convention organizers may want the Sanders folks to be nice and polite, if they feel that they were screwed from the word go, they may not feel particularly civil.

  6. What does former Governor and current regular dude Ed Rendell plan to do if we don’t? I don’t think he can remove elected Delegates from that party’s Convention. It isn’t like he’s graciously hosting us…or maybe he thinks he is. If he thinks that, he is tragically wrong.

We’ll see you at the DNC Convention in Philly in July, where we delegates will do all we can to make our Democratic Platform something more liberals can support, so we have a better chance in future races.

Even if Ed Rendell and his fellow Hillary backers are inconvenienced.

Candidate, Democratic Delegate for Bernie Sanders, PA Congressional District 15

  7. I have a hard time getting over the irony of people who spent months decrying the undemocratic superdelegates now relying on a strategy entirely focused on convincing superdelegates – the party faithful who have stuck by the party when riding waves and when being battered by them – that a self-described socialist who has bungled helping down-ballot progressives in critical races and demonstrated no party loyalty and faced no real attacks from Republicans and conservatives ever, would be the better Democrat to represent the party and win the presidency in November.

  8. Unknown-

If they’ve had Estey wired for years, Rendell’s got to be a huge target. Probably a lot of interesting stuff on those tapes. Did they have enough to wiretap Rendell?

Who will be left to run the DNC convention if this continues?

  9. Diano: How many conversations do you suppose Rendell has held with John Estey in recent years? Quite a few. Quite a few indeed…

  10. Dungeon-
Just because you play Dungeons and Dragons, you assume everyone lives in their parents’ basement like you do.

    Sick and Tired-

You must have a very sad life if that is the funniest think you heard all day.

What would be funny would be to see you and some of the other nobodies post your real names so we can see who really has an ax to grind or ulterior motives.

For all I know, you could be an anonymous handle for Joe Sestak.

  11. David Diano needs to stop alienating his parents or they will kick him out of their basement for good.
Funniest thing I have heard all day.
Someone please Tell Diano he is a No Body…
He has NO position within the Democrat Party ANYWHERE…in any State. Or County.
He is just a Mad mean person that cries…

  12. David needs to stop alienating his parents or they will kick him out of their basement for good.

  13. Fast Eddie was a complete failure as DNC chairman, and he is doing just as badly as Convention chair. He should pull a Paul Ryan and offer to resign. But no, too many bribes and kickbacks to garner before July…

  14. Big Ed’s been doing a lot of damage. If he wants Hillary to beat Trump, he needs to stop alienating Bernie’s supporters.

  15. @ David Diano Hi Belated congrats on Sestaks defeat.
When will someone please shut this bow hard up before he sinks the Pa Dems. My god every time he speaks he makes it an uphill battle for everyone he’s trying to help. Charlie Breslin fo your job and stop filling your pockets with Eds money and Stop him from himself.
