Rep. Pitts Comments on Fiscal Commission’s Recommendation Against Value-Added Tax

Washington–On May 20, 2010, Rep. Joe Pitts led 154 Republicans on a letter to the co-chairs of the President’s Fiscal Commission, former Sen. Alan Simpson and Erskine Bowles, asking them to reject any attempt to establish a Value-Added Tax in the U.S. Today, the co-chairs issued a preliminary proposal that included a number of recommended tax reforms, but that did not propose a new VAT.
Rep. Pitts’ statement follows:

“I’m pleased to see that the co-chairs of the Fiscal Commission listened to our concerns and rejected a European-style Value-Added Tax. Some in Washington, including Speaker Pelosi, indicated that this hidden sales tax would be a good way for the government to raise additional revenue.

“I agree with Republican members of the Commission that some of the proposals are provocative. While not commenting on the implications of these proposals, I think we can applaud the co-chairs for passing up the temptation to create a new class of taxation that would hold back job growth.”
