Report: Schmidt Spoke With Jack Smith About 2020 Election

Al Schmidt

CNN is reporting that Pennsylvania’s Secretary of the Commonwealth Al Schmidt met with federal prosecutors in March as part of the ongoing investigation into efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

The previously unreported interview indicates that special counsel Jack Smith is focused on actions taken by former President Donald Trump and his allies in seven key battleground states as they sought to upend Joe Biden’s electoral victory.

Smith’s team has sent subpoenas to local and state officials in all seven of the key states – Georgia, New Mexico, Nevada, Michigan, Arizona, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin – that were targeted by Trump and his allies and where Trump’s campaign convened the false electors as part of the effort to subvert the Electoral College.

Schmidt, a Republican who served as a Philadelphia City Commissioner during the 2020 election, was questioned about issues he encountered during his tenure, including how misinformation about widespread voter fraud impacted him and other election officials.

Prosecutors have also met with top election officials in Georgia (Brad Raffensperger), Michigan (Jocelyn Benson) and New Mexico (Maggie Toulouse Oliver).

During a recent interview with CNN’s Kaitlan Collins, Benson said, “[The interview] really underscored, I think, the depth through which the federal prosecutors are looking into everything and the seriousness with which they’re taking what occurred and the quest for justice to ensure it doesn’t happen again.

“Myself and the election officials who have – at request or simply because we have a story tell – have been speaking to authorities, I think it’s really a reflection of our desire to ensure that the law is followed, and where there’s evidence of wrongdoing, there’s justice that is served.”

Other officials from those states also have been interviewed by federal investigators as part of the special counsel probe, including Rusty Bowers, a former top GOP official in Arizona.

Smith’s sprawling investigations has focused on multiple alleged election-stealing efforts, including pressure campaigns on local officials, a scheme to appoint fake electors and pushing then-Vice President Mike Pence to block Biden’s victory.

Olivia Troye, a former national security advisor for Pence, said on Thursday’s “CNN This Morning” that the round of latest interviews appears to signal that Smith is nearing the end of his investigation and that charging decisions will be made soon.

“I think they’re getting close to wrapping it up, hopefully,” she said. “I think they need to move forward. I think they’re now talking to people who are really there at the front lines of it from 2020, being bullied and intimidated by these individuals.”

  1. Please indict and convict this bulbous cancer on American democracy soon. The country will not be sane until Trump and MAGA are removed from the scene.
