Rich Fitzgerald Announces Bid For Third Term As Allegheny County Executive

To what WESA describes as “surprising precisely no one,” Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald announced his bid for a third and final term for County Executive on Monday night.

Fitzgerald, first elected in 2011 after being the Allegheny County Council President, has comfortably won two terms and trumpeted some of his previous initiatives during the announcement, while discussing what he hopes to accomplish if given a third term.

“Pittsburgh’s trajectory and Allegheny County’s trajectory is in a positive direction,” Fitzgerald said according to the Pittsburgh Tribune Review. “But we’ve got some more challenges ahead of us because not everybody has enjoyed the things that are happening, and that’s a challenge I have for the last term of this office. There are some communities that haven’t seen the population growth, they haven’t seen the investment … and have lost some of their tax base. We’ve got to figure out a way to help those folks.”

Fitzgerald specifically cited “strengthening the county’s financial position” by reaching the highest bond credit rating in 35 years without relying on raising property taxes, coupled with investing in economic development and infrastructure the Tribune-Review reports.

He was joined Monday night on stage by a host of Democratic elected officials including Gov. Tom Wolf, Sen. Bob Casey, Attorney General Josh Shapiro, Reps. Mike Doyle and Conor Lamb, House Democratic Leader Frank Dermody, Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto, and various other elected officials.

“Allegheny County is a world-class story of transformation, and that’s due in no small part to the leadership of Rich Fitzgerald,” Wolf said according to WESA.

In 2011, Fitzgerald defeated Raja, Republican Committee Chair of Allegheny County and current candidate for state Senate District 37, by receiving over 60% of the vote. In 2015, he ran unopposed in the Democratic primary, then defeated independent Todd Elliott Koger in the general election, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

As of now, there is one Republican looking to challenge Fitzgerald, the Post-Gazette reports.

Former Republican Allegheny County Councilman, who filed to run in the New Hampshire Republican presidential primary in 2015, Matt Drozd is looking to unseat the incumbent, according to the Post-Gazette.

“I’m a moderate. I’m a fiscal conservative,” Drozd told the Post-Gazette. “I squeeze the almighty tax dollar, and don’t want to put burdens on people who can’t afford it.”

The candidate filing deadline is March 12, with the primary scheduled for May 21, according to the Tribune-Review.

The general election is Nov. 5.

  1. I’m ready to change party affiliation. From D to R or Ind. Too many socialist ideas. Look what 80+ years has done to Pittsburgh. But yet, idiots , keep the machine rolling.Trump has not offended me in the least and I believe we are headed in the right direction.

  2. We need someone to run against Fitz and Matt is a good candidate. He’d do the job and not sell out like Peduto and Wolf.

  3. can someone tell us what fitz’a done the last 8 years? i pose that question to many and nobody has an answer.

He is so out of touch he seriously believed, the only one, amazon was going to locate here–he really believed that.

Now that the governor’s office is closed to him–you will never be governor rich — who will he be his whipping boy? Or does he want to beat up on pregnant women, ala Chelsa Wagner. fitz is just an embarrassment.

  4. ONCE AGAIN:
FITZ had an undervote of 30,000 in his 2015 primary and an independent candidate who never campaigned had over 55,000 votes that November. (Honorable mention goes to Doug Shield’s dog who had over 5,000 write ins). DSA isn’t running anyone and there are even rumours they sold out to FITZ(so much for the revolution) He could easily fall like a big rotting Redwood.
