Romney Rallies in Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh — Despite a drop in unemployment numbers in a newly released jobs report, presumptive Republican Presidential nominee Mitt Romney said President Barack Obama’s policies continue to stifle entrepreneurship to an audience of around 300.

During the rally, which was held at Saureisen, an independently owned producer of corrosion-resistant construction materials in ‘O Hara Township, Romney addressed issues ranging from economic policy to military funding.

A large portion of Romney’s speech focused on the jobs report released by the federal government Friday. Romney said that although the 8.1 percent unemployment rate looked promising, most of the figures are based on 340,000 individuals dropping out of the workforce.  He added that these figures allow government statisticians to send out misleading figures.

Focusing on his plans for the future of the country, Romney used examples of individuals he met through at different campaign stops.

One example used by Romney was that of a man who was employed by the public works office in his city. Romney said the man decided he wanted to open a landscaping business, and now employs over 100 individuals.

Romney said President Obama’s liberal policies stifle this entrepreneurial spirit with high taxes and burdensome regulations.

“Liberal policies don’t work,” Romney said. “I I remember Ronald Reagan used to roughly say :‘It’s not that liberals are ignorant, it’s just what they know is wrong.”

While high taxes and regulations have hurt small business during Obama’s presidency, Romney said Obama’s Affordable Care Act causes the most harm to small business in the nation. Romney added that if the United States Supreme Court finds the law constitutional, government spending will account for half of the nation’s economy.

Romney also addressed rising energy costs, saying that Obama’s has shown throughout his presidency that he opposes coal, natural gas, oil and nuclear energy through additional regulations toward the industries. He said these costs affect small businesses that consume large amounts of energy.

“The president says he’s ‘all of the above ‘ when it comes to energy and I couldn’t figure out what he meant because most of us who follow this topic know that all of  the above  includes all energy sources,” Romney said.  “But he’s anti-coal, anti-oil, anti-natural gas, and anti-nuclear, and then I figured he’s for all sources above ground, and all these are below ground.”

In addition to Obama’s mishandling of the economy, Romney said the president’s budgetary priorities have harmed the U.S.’s status as a military superpower. He added that the president is “comfortable” in cutting $500 million in funding toward the military.

Under his presidency, Romney said he would guarantee the building of warships from nine to fifteen a year as well as increasing benefits toward veterans.

Earlier in the morning, Obama’s campaign team organized a  press conference that included  Allegheny County Democratic and Union officials. The event highlighted Romney’s record as a venture capitalist and governor of Massachusetts.

United Steel Workers’ District 10 Director John DeFazio  said Romney’s record as governor of Massachusetts and CEO of Bain Capital speaks for itself.

“Governor Romney is hostile to manufacturing and indifferent to the jobs many of us rely on, Defazio said. “As Governor his state shed manufacturing jobs at twice the national average and while at Bain Romney destroyed manufacturing jobs. His policies as a candidate are just as bad and would be devastating to our workers and their families.”

  1. Dear Mitt-
Oil and gas production are up (and I think even at/near record highs). Also, under Obama construction of the first new nuclear power plant in decades was approved. Finally, we are making increases in wind, solar and renewables (and finally passed legislation to increase fuel efficiency standards for cars).

Sounds pretty “all of the above” to me.

  2. How much are Republicans paying PoliticsPA to have the Anti Mark Critz ad on the homepage?

  3. There is an interesting parallel between unemployment rates and CBO scoring on Congressional bills. They are both misleading.

We get a truer picture if we view employment employment. How many people are working and then look at this by age group. The pictures are not quite as rosy. Only older peoples employment rates are increasing, as they can no longer afford to retire at 65. The lower age brackets have seen a loss of employment.

I can’t wait to see the President debate Mitts on Economic Issues.
