Conceding that a potential recount would not turn the race in his favor, Democratic LG candidate Jonathan Saidel bowed out of the LG race Wednesday afternoon.

His exit means Scott Conklin wins the down-ballot race and will pair with Dan Onorato on the Democratic gubernatorial ticket. They will face the GOP team of Tom Corbett and Jim Cawley.

The concession comes eight days after the election, which had seemed poised for a recount as recently as earlier Wednesday afternoon.

Saidel’s full release is below:

“Earlier today our campaign announced that we wanted the automatic recount to proceed in accordance with state law. Unfortunately, circumstances dictated that we make a decision by noon today about a potential recount before the original count was completed. Since that time, approximately half of the nearly 4000 uncounted ballots remaining from yesterday have been counted with very little change in vote totals. While nearly 2000 votes remain uncounted, it is clear to us that the final totals will find Jonathan trailing by more votes than we believe we can overcome in a recount based on previous recount experience.

Jonathan Saidel has spent a lifetime saving taxpayers money and has determined that the estimated $500,000 a recount will cost the state is not justifiable given the significant odds against a successful conclusion from our perspective. Jonathan has instructed his legal team to prepare notification to the Secretary of State of his request not to proceed with the automatic recount.

On behalf of Jonathan Saidel and our entire campaign team, we want to thank the voters of Pennsylvania for giving us the opportunity to participate in this great democratic process. Jonathan remains deeply committed to serving our Commonwealth and electing a Democratic governor in 2010.”
