Santorum to Obama: “You Don’t Understand America” (With Video)

Santorum to Obama: “You Don’t Understand America” (With Video)

By Keegan Gibson, Managing Editor

Former Senator Rick Santorum looked comfortable in front of a friendly crowd at the National Rifle Association convention this weekend in Pittsburgh.

Speaking to a room of 500, Santorum drew applause for his aggressive criticism of President Obama and his appeal to the country’s religious roots.

“I believe that the people who are in Washington DC today have a very different view of what America is all about than our founders did,” Santorum said

In his speech, Santorum focused on a recent quote from President Obama during a recent speech about entitlement programs.

“What Barack Obama and then he said, quote, ‘I’m gonna go one step further. America was not a great country before those programs,’” said Santorum.

“Barack Obama said that prior to 1965, prior to the government taking more of your resources and redistributing to another group of people, America was not a great country.”

“Mr. President, you don’t understand America if you believe that,” thundered Santorum in the most memorable moment of the speech.

There is a slight difference between Santorum’s account and the official transcript of the President’s April 13 remarks. According to the White House, Obama’s statement read as follows: “We would not be a great country without those commitments.”

In many ways it was home turf for the former Senator. Prior to his two terms in the U.S. Senate, he served nearby in the southwest PA-based 18th district. As later speakers noted, it’s an area with the highest rate of per capita gun ownership in the country.

  1. The last thing the country needs is Santorum trying to dive in anywhere he can. His stupid comments on different subjects were enough to send him packing in Pa. Maybe he should run for a weather forcasters position on a pay channel? Its plain to see he’s a career politician, and he doesn’t have the aptitude of a president! Not only that, but, Pa. has had enough of republican spin and babble. Eickleburger”s the only one that makes a lick of sense. The rest of the right needs dumped!
