Scanlon Notches Comfortable Win in PA5

Ultimately, it wasn’t close. The race that many pundits expected would last well into the night and come down to a handful of votes turned into a relatively comfortable win.

Mary Gay Scanlon navigated a field of 10 candidates to win the Democratic primary in the 5th Congressional district.  She is an attorney with Ballard Spahr and has worked extensively with nonprofits.

Scanlon defeated the nine other candidates which included Philadelphia Deputy Mayor Rich Lazer and state Reps. Margo Davidson and Greg Vitali.

With 94% of precincts reporting, Scanlon held a 7,000 vote lead: 28% to Lazer’s 16%.

The new district is centered around Delaware county, but includes a small portion of Philadelphia. It is open due to the retirement of Rep. Pat Meehan in the face of a sexual harassment scandal.

Scanlon will face Republican Pearl Kim in the general election.
