The date of the Special Election showdown is set for March 15. The Berks County parties will now go about selecting their candidates for the two month campaign. The full release is below.

HARRISBURG—Senate President Pro Tempore and Lieutenant Governor Joe Scarnati announced todaythat the special election for the 11th Senatorial District previously held by State Senator Michael O’Pake willtake place on March 15, 2011.

“With the passing of Senator O’Pake, the citizens of the 11th District are without his committed, tirelessrepresentation,” Scarnati said. “Understanding the importance and demands of this position, I have scheduled aspecial election for March 15, 2011.

“In light of the many important and pressing issues facing the citizens of the Commonwealth, I felt it wasnecessary to fill this post as quickly as possible,” Scarnati added. “This provides sufficient time for candidatesto campaign and inform the citizens of this district of their qualifications and positions on the issues.”

Under the Pennsylvania Constitution, the Lieutenant Governor is responsible for announcing the date ofa special election.
