Scenes from an OFA SOTU Watch Party

By Elyse Clonan and Michael Begg, Contributing Writers

Philadelphia — Obama enthusiasts and Democratic activists – including Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter – came together to show their support for the President and his vision for the future at a series of State of the Union watch parties.

“This President saved this country,” Nutter said to the crowd who had gathered at the Center City West State of the Union watch party.  “This President was the only one who was able to get health care reform down…and numerous laws with regard to civil rights.  He said he would bring the troops home and did it, he tracked down Osama bin Laden and killed him…This President tells you what he’s going to do and does it.”

The 20-person crowd present at the Center City West viewing party certainly agreed with Mayor Nutter, as his remarks and later the remarks of President Obama were met with cheers and open displays of admiration.  Regardless of whatever the greater American public may make of the President’s address, it appears that he enjoys a substantial amount of support in the City of Brotherly Love.

The viewing parties were organized by the President’s campaign organization, Obama for America, which partners with the Democratic National Committee.

In preparation for the President’s annual address, Democratic supporters throughout the country organized more than 2,500 watch parties.  More than a hundred of the viewing parties took place in the city of Philadelphia. These parties, which were open to the public, welcomed Americans from all walks of life who came together for a common purpose: to support President Obama, and to do everything feasibly possible to facilitate his re-election.

An estimated 43 million Americans throughout the country tuned in on the night of January 24th to watch President Obama’s State of the Union address, which he called “An America Built to Last.” In the third annual address of his presidency, Obama outlined his vision for America’s near future; stressing a number of social, economic and governmental reforms which he believes necessary for America’s continued success.
