Schwartz Endorsed by UMWA

Rep. Allyson Schwartz

The United Mine Workers of America have officially decided to throw their weight behind Rep. Allyson Schwartz, the current frontrunner in the 2014 Governor’s race.

In a press release sent out on Tuesday morning, Schwartz’s campaign expressed their gratification for the Union’s support.

“The UMWA of Pennsylvania have been an important part of the state’s economy for nearly a century,” Allyson Schwartz said. “They have been vital to the labor movement and critical toward powering Pennsylvania’s economy. I have been proud to stand with them for years as they have worked to improve safety standards and health benefits, and I am honored they have chosen to stand with our campaign as we work to bring effective leadership back to Harrisburg.”

Although the United Mine Workers typically endorse Democrats, they represent a relatively conservative wing of the party. Endorsements like this can only help as Schwartz attempts to show that she can be a strong coalition-builder not just in the primary, but also in the general election.

Furthermore, the United Mine Workers have a strong base in Western PA, another added benefit of this endorsement for the Philadelphia-based candidate.

Schwartz’s competition in the governor’s race includes former DEP Secretaries Katie McGinty and John Hanger, former Revenue Secretary Tom Wolf, Allentown Mayor Ed Pawlowski, and possibly State Treasurer Rob McCord.

Well, any “unemployed workers” come Nov 2014 would be unemployed during Corbett’s term, so I would think they’d want to kick him out too.

Socialist? Seriously? You should really meet some actual socialists so they can explain to you why the Dems are not socialists.

  2. No surprise that mine union officials endorse a fellow socialist. The question is how will the unemployed workers vote for their jobs or for Schwartz?

  3. Personally I’m not a Schwartz fan from the standpoint that I think Corbett has a better chance verse her than say McCord. That said if it does end up Schwartz v Corbett it will be a flat out litmus test if the “T” is shrinking and/or can carry the day.

  4. bobguzzardi-

You are really clueless if you think guns are going to be the big issue in PA Gov race. The NRA effort in Colorado was limited to only two vulnerable officials. The NRA couldn’t tip PA for Romney, where they have made guns an issue against Obama.

Corbett’s the least popular Gov in PA history. The only shooting he really does is at himself in the foot.

As for coal mining, it’s a dangerous profession that will be shrinking over the next few generations as cleaner alternative energy sources are developed. Coal mining is a terrible and dangerous job, and the unions protect the workers’ rights. If the GOP had it’s way, the coal miners would be non-union workers in more dangerous conditions and being paid scraps.

  5. Workers’ interests are different from Union Leadership’s interests as this endorsement demonstrates. Obama Schwartz policies to fundamentally change America with anti-coal energy policies.

  6. Allyson Schwartz and SE Democrats need to remember this.
“Two Democratic lawmakers in Colorado, including the president of the state Senate, were recalled Tuesday in elections brought about by their support for tougher gun control laws. “ http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2013/09/11/colorado-dems-face-historic-recall-over-gun-votes/#ixzz2eafqp400

Allyson Schwartz has a record supporting gun control. Many of her southeast ideologically elite liberal supporters are enthusiastic about gun control.

Gov. Corbett is solidly in support of Pennsylvania’s Constitutional mandate: Article I Declaration of Rights Section 21 Right to Bear Arms The right of citizens to bear arms in defense of themselves and the State shall not be questioned.

  7. Between the two parties, which is fa more likely to shut down the coal industry? More proof that most unions are sheep who always vote Democrat even if it’s probably not in their best interest.

  8. That is major news….can’t imagine there aren’t a few more in the pipe if she is bringing this one out now

  9. Republicans have consistently sought to crush unions, undercut worker safety laws (especially for miners), and keep wages/benefits as low as possible.

Yet, right-wing nutjobs act shocked when a union supports a Democrat.
