Schwartz the Next Pelosi?

Former House Speaker and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi won’t serve forever, and Rep. Allyson Schwartz is reportedly on the short list of members who could step into leadership if (or when) a vacuum emerges.

Reports the National Journal:

Colleagues, staffers, and outside strategists say that at least a half-dozen younger lawmakers—some of whom already hold positions where their work for colleagues could equal chits—are prepping for leadership ascension.

The names most often floated are Democratic Caucus Vice Chairman Xavier Becerra of California; Budget Committee ranking member Chris Van Hollen of Maryland; Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida; Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chairman Steve Israel of New York; DCCC National Finance Chairman and New Democratic Coalition Chairman Joseph Crowley of New York, who also serves as chief deputy whip; and Rep. Allyson Schwartz of Pennsylvania, the DCCC recruitment chairwoman who also manages the organization’s candidate services.

It’s an inside game at present; none of the potential new members of leadership are campaigning publicly.

“It’s well deserved,” said Marcel Groen, chairman of the Montgomery County Democratic Committee. “She has consistently worked hard not just legislatively, but in the structure of the Democratic caucus. She’s a very, very good fundraiser.”

“Philosophically, she would play well on the issues Democrats want to get done nationally.”

Schwartz has held her suburban Philadelphia seat since 2004. For the 14 years prior, she served as a state Senator. She was executive director of a Planned Parenthood clinic in Philadelphia, the Elizabeth Blackwell Center, from 1975 to 1988.

  1. Alyson is a terrible cultural fit for Northeast Philly, which under the new map is now the majority of that seat. The seat is too Democratic for a Republican to win in the general. But she’s definitely vulnerable to a primary challenge.

  2. What is really funny is Joe Hoeffel would still hold that seat and she would be rotting in the state senate except Hoeffel made a series of foolish decisions leading to his downfall and permanent status as the mentally-challenged idiot of Democrat politics: giving up his seat to run for US Senate against another SE liberal, Arlen Specter, and getting crushed. Running for one day for Lt. Gov until his hand was slapped by Ed Rendell and he humiliatingly had to withdraw. Running for county commissioner and getting crushed by Bruce Castor. Hooking up with the criminal Jim Matthews leading to the ouster of both as commissioners and the arrest of Matthews. Running for governor and getting crushed by everyone else running, placing dead last. If Schwartz say prayers at night, she should thank God for making Joe Hoeffel so dumb.

  3. I still can’t believe Allyson Schwartz represents Northeast Philly!!! How the hell did that happen!! It’s only a matter of time until that mistake is corrected. You just know she hates it here.

  4. Allyson is so liberal she could never win statewide. So she’s stuck in the House.
