The Scranton Building Trades Council (SBTC) threw their support behind Mark Smith’s candidacy for Lieutenant Governor.

The SBTC is a collection of local builders’ unions, which include carpenters and plumbers. The decision to endorse Smith was unanimous at their last meeting.

“Mark Smith is a new voice for middle class families and he will do an excellent job as Lieutenant Governor,”  Rick Schraeder, the SBTC President, said. “The Scranton Building Trades Council looks forward to working with him and his campaign throughout his candidacy.”

Last week, Smith received the endorsement of the Wilkes-Barre Building Trades Council and today, he expressed his enthusiasm for the SBTC endorsement.

“I appreciate the endorsement of the Scranton Building Trades and I look forward to working with them and organized labor throughout the commonwealth to grow the economy and create jobs.”

“Labor is lining up behind his candidacy. [Labor issues] are the cornerstone of our campaign,” Andrew Collier, the campaign manager for Smith’s run, told PoliticsPA.

Collier stated that Smith has been working “hand-in-hand” with labor and that the campaign, in an effort to expand support outside Northeastern PA, has been “growing our network and working with labor across the state.” He cited the Philadelphia based Boilermakers Union Local 13 as a an example of a successful outreach effort.

Collier went on to say that the race is “a referendum on Tom Corbett.” However, he insisted that the Smith candidacy was independent from the gubernatorial race and that Smith has not made an endorsement for governor.

Smith is the sole Democratic commissioner in Bradford County.

Also running for Lieutenant Governor are State Senator Mike Stack, Harrisburg City Councilman Brad Koplinski, and former Rep. Mark Critz.
