It’s been a busy night for Philadelphia Democrats.
First, they chose Sarah Del Ricci to serve as their nominee in the HD-170 special election. Now, they are tapping State Rep. John Sabatina Jr. to for the special election to fill Lieutenant Governor Mike Stack’s old Senate seat in the 5th district.
“I am proud to accept the Democratic nomination for the special election to represent the 5th Senatorial District,” Sabatina said. “Lt. Gov. Mike Stack has served his constituents in this district as Senator with honor, conviction, and incomparable leadership. Today, I turn my attention to running a vigorous campaign to make our streets safe, fully fund our public schools, and creating good jobs through economic development.”
Sabatina has represented the 174th District in the State House since 2006. Prior to that he served as Assistant District Attorney.
“It was important to have someone with good, solid legislative experience,” Lt. Governor Stack told PoliticsPA. “John has already represented parts of the 5th district and it should be a seamless transition.”

Great guy!!!
Hey FOP, you still trust the Democrats who promised this seat to Mcnesby if he backed liberal anti-cop Democrat Tom Wolf.
@Shannon. Stop drinking the Boyle koolaid. John has done a stellar job at Harrisburg, is loved in his district, and will do an absolutely amazing job as our Senator. We should all wish John the best of luck and support him.
Congratulations John! You are the perfect choice for the senatorial vacancy!
The City Cmt can reject the caucus recommendations..not sure that they will but this was a recent change. Maybe the Boyle’s can get it overturned?
Nominations for special elections for City and County officers are done by city committee.
Nominations for congressman, national convention delegates, state legislators, and council members are done “upon the recommendation of the District caucus and which the vacancy occurs or happens”. Rule X, art. 1. The district caucus consist of the ward leaders whose wards are in the subject district. See Rule X, art. 1, 2. City committee then holds a ratification vote for district caucus nominations. See Rule X, art. 4, § C. If city committee rejects the district caucus’s recommendation, the district caucus gets to reconsider. See id. If city committee again rejects the district caucus’s reconsidered recommendation, city committee gets to pick the nominee. See id.
Congratulations, Rep. Sabatina!
