Could the Keystone State have a candidate for Speaker of the U.S. House?

Rep. Dan Meuser (R-09) is thinking about tossing his hat in the ring should the impasse continue.

With the withdrawal of Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.) and the pause of the candidacy of Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), the GOP is looking at other options.

One was to appoint Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.) as a “temporary” Speaker for a time-limited period to allow the House to continue the people’s business.

Reports coming from a Thursday closed-door conference indicate that may no longer be an option with McHenry questioning the legality of temporary Speaker power.

House Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) said she would “strongly oppose” any effort to work with Democrats to empower McHenry to act as temporary Speaker and reiterated her support for Jordan.

That sets the stage for Meuser or another Republican caucus member.

Meuser told POLITICO’s Olivia Beavers, “I don’t know who the next candidate will be. I think there is gonna be a number of people in the mix. Honestly, I might be one of them,” he said, touting his experience in the business world. “We are missing things in our ability to get things done and in uniting clearly. And if I can help that, I am interested.”

A day earlier, Meuser teased a run in an interview with National Review, saying after Jordan’s first formal floor vote that he might consider running if no progress is made in subsequent rounds. “Are you kidding? If we go back to it, I’m considering it because I’m not gonna let this kindergarten continue. I’ll do it.”

Meuser, state secretary of revenue under Gov. Tom Corbett, won his first term in Congress in 2018. He easily won reelection in 2020 and again in 2022 after redistricting.

Pennsylvania has not had a Speaker of the U.S. House since 1881.
